No, you can't get CNN online unless you have a cable or other TV account. They make you do a third party authentication before you can view the live feed. So there's nothing to be gained there except the ability to watch online if you already have a TV service.

I get all of my news online now in text with smatterings of video. I was never someone who turned on the TV in the mornings. I have witnessed it - someone with the TV going while they shower, dress and eat - and it struck me as a very odd way to begin the day.

Sucks. I can deal with Fox News and NPR as I usually don't actually watch it so much as listen to it, but sometimes things need to be seen.

It depends on what's important to you. My wife and I prefer local news which includes current events, weather, traffic reports, etc.
 
I have satellite TV at my house because I live in the middle of nowhere. My parents are the only ones that watch it. I haven't been into TV for years. I've been more into video games, music, and the Internet.

What do you mean by "not the same." I find OTA picture quality much better than most cable providers. Do you mean the lack of a pause and rewind? If that’s the case you can get a DVR. Yeah they are about $350 if you want a lifetime guide subscription, but that cost will be made up in a few months without a cable subscription.
 
Running purely on streaming services on 3rd week. Not missing live TV (USB-TV tuner). I haven't owned a TV the last 5 years.

No, I just meant that local news isn't the same as CNN. And it's just really weird that when I go to 'News' in Roku I find no CNN - but there's a Sarah Palin channel?

At this point it's apparent to most people that cable TV is going downhill fast. So why is this more apparent to Sarah Palin than to CNN? I'm not a Palin hater but dang, that's a low bar on which to trip.

Same problem here. Since the damn little boxes to watch TV are going up from FREE to $2.50 each month and my other boxes range from $12 to $22 per month (and probably rising), I'm going to go cablecard multi-tuner system and get some old XBox 360 4GB (I believe that's right) and remotes and just get rid of the other stuff. $35 savings per month pays for that stuff quickly and I'll get the added bonus of whole house DVR instead of shitty little boxes (that shouldn't be required to rent to watch TV anyway). 😡

Not really.

I watch both. If you don't care about shows then you can skip the Netflix subscription.

For sports, I get MLB.TV on my Roku app and can watch everything there. Then I get the NFL Game Rewind on Plex and can watch anything I miss there. Local OTA channels covers news and NFL games. Tennis I can watch on local channels, but I haven't looked into any streaming options available as I am not as religious about following it. I don't care about any other sports.

TWC and other cable providers now have full power to encrypt everything on cable per the FCC. Part of the deal was that they had to provide free or very cheap digital boxes for a period of time. That time has now expired and TWC is charging $2.50 for every TV that has small, almost useless digital box. You have to have one of those or some other kind of system to decrypt the signal.

I personally think's it's a crock of shit that the FCC basically lifted the ban on charging per coax outlet in your home...which is essentially what this is.

TV makers might as well remove the digital tuner in the TV and make it a monitor. The digital tuner is taking up space and wasting energy...because it certainly isn't being used.

I don't understand. I don't have to pay a fee for OTA stuff so the tuner is certainly used.

If you're paying for cable then you haven't really cut the cord.

We use the digital tuner on every TV. It's powered by the OTA antenna in our attic. So the digital tuner is definitely not taking up space and wasting energy. We get our $0 worth every month.

Not having monthly cable TV/satellite bill is similar to not having mortgage, home phone, or car payment. It's very liberating feeling even if it's only $60-$100 savings a month. It just feels good not having to send a check each month to the cable/satellite monopoly crooks. Now only if I can do something about our contract cell phone bill. I've about 9 more months before I'm free.

I don't have any of those, and if it were up to me, I weren't for sports (and my wife), I wouldn't have cable TV either.
 
I'm days away from cutting the cord... I have ~15 locals from my attic antenna, Netflix, Sling TV, & Crackle... during football season I will temporarily get the Sling sports pkg. What more could I want? As soon as my free Amazon Fire Stick arrives in the mail, Dish Network will be getting the "so sorry" call from me.

I'm curious what made you decide on the Amazon Fire Stick (other than free)?
 
I've found the Amazon Fire Stick to stream cleaner than my Chromecast.
With Chromecast I will get random artifacts whereas the Fire Stick doesn't do that.

It was free.

I already have a Chromecast, but Sling hasn't confirmed they will support Chromecast any time soon. The other free option was a Roku stick... the Amazon over Roku decision was arbitrary more than anything else

It seems more reliable too. Sure there is the remote but both our cell phones often have problems with casting to the Chromecast although the iPad doesn't for some reason.
