Speaking at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Bernd Diemer, senior game designer of Crytek, explained that next-generation consoles don?t offer enough computational power to run Crysis, German publication Heise reported.

Although Crysis will support both current and the next version of DirectX, Crytek claims that only DirectX 10 allows the game to run as it was intended by the developers because the next-generation DirectX API, which will ship along with Windows Vista, allows more effects and more objects to be drawn on the screen with a smaller computational cost for the hardware.

Diemer explained that ?next generation consoles like the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 do not offer the sufficient power? to assure the quality of gameplay Crytek demand for Crysis.

Crytek reiterated at GC 06 that currently, Crysis in only in development for Windows. We haven?t lost hope that we?ll eventually see an Xbox 360 version of this first-person shooter.

I saw an extended interview with him from another event. When asked why Crysis was for PC, he said it was to prove PCs were still a legitimate gaming platform. So I wouldn't exactly take him as an unbiased source of information.

I think it's more to do with DX10 than lack of power. If the engine can't scale to work on the current gen consoles it's a piss poor engine.

Heh... reason #824 why I don't buy consoles... you get what you get. My computer however... fully upgradeable. I don't know if this game is REALLY too much for consoles, or if it's just a case of the developers over-hyping their game. But either way... I wouldn't take it on a console anyway. When's this supposed to be out anyway? My computer needs a challenge.

I used to think like that as well...until I got an XBOX 360.

Don't have to worry about driver updates, if my CPU is fast enough or tinker with image quality settings so that my $500 video card performs optimally. I pop in a CD and it just works.

Now if only Outpost hadn't backordered my copy of Saints Row. BITCHES! :|

My philosophy is to only buy a console because there's a game I want to play on it. As technology, consoles are obsolete before they hit the street, and get more and more obsolete every year.

Might have to spring for a Conroe and a new video card just to play this.

 same until I got an XBOX. I just love sitting back and playing. Not to mention some games just easier with a controller, none of that awkward keyboard arrangement ******.

Whatever floats your boat! Personally I detest controllers. Besides... I love working on computers so it's a bit of a treat to pop in a new card or CPU. I'd get bored without a machine to tinker on.

Like I said, I had the same attitude when I was younger about upgrading every few months; buying the latest video card and latest CPU. As I got older, it got less and less important to me and I was sick of opening up my computer. I got the point of getting sick of not being able to play the latest games b/c my computer wasn't fast enough or because my graphics card couldn't run it at max details. I simply refused to keep pouring more and more money into my system. That and dealing with with my games crashing due to driver issues or other hardware problems.

So I gave up PC gaming altogether and bought a laptop that had an integrated Intel GPU and didn't play a game (save for solitaire) for roughly a year or so. Then I bought my Xbox 360 and I have a newfound appreciation for gaming and haven't been able to put the controller down. I've even been able to ween my brain off keyboard+mouse and have begun to excel at using the controller's analog sticks.

Guess I won't be playing this game! My favorite game right now? Super Smash Brothers. It's great fun to hook up 4 controller and kick each other's butts when you're drunk. My pal has a media center pc and, whenever we're over drunk (or worse) something goes wrong - either he has to remap the controller, restart, fiddle with tv out settings.. Something goes wrong and we're just there thinking 'dammit - we want to play'.. I like my gamecube - simple, communal, small, quiet. I can hook it up to my 57" hdtv and have fun with a room full of people and use my notebook for all of my computing needs. And it cost me like $70 while the games are often under $20 used!

This is why I stopped following the computer gaming thing. I flat out got tired of messing with crap to get games to run correctly/fast/whatever. I love the simplicity of just popping in a game and playing it. I'm loving my little DS right now, and hoping the wife gets my hints about wanting a 360 for my bday/xmas this year. Saint's Row and Oblivion here I come!! (I hope).

You make a persuasive arguement.

there's no argument to be made. keyboard and mouse >>>> controller. pc hardware is upgradable. it's not like it's a secret or anything. everyone knows this stuff. pc wins.

Damn, Crysis sounds like it'll need a DX10 card. Game looks great, but maybe not great enough to warrant a new video card :(

It doesn't require much effort/intelligence to install the prefered game, then do what you "normal" people do.

For a PC gaming enthusiast, it's no problem. But for the average Joe, which is a better proposition:

[*]Buy $399 Xbox 360
[*]Buy $399 PC from Best buy, then get home and find out that the integrated graphics on the motherboard won't play Prey like you THINK it should even though the box says that it has Intel "Extreme Graphics." Joe Blow goes back to Best Buy to complain, then find out that he need a $350 graphics card to play this game in all its glory.

I see a lot of other people have pretty much given up on PCs as well.

I still love gaming on my PC, the controls cannot be matched on any console. But man...rockin' the 42" HDTV with a wireless controller in my hands, surround sound on... That's hard to beat. The Xbox 360 was wholly worth the money.

I'm totally aware that consoles don't need upgrading for years on end, but PC's do. It's just sad that a majority of the population is still ignorant with computers, even basic information.
