PC Gamer Holiday 2007 FINAL VERDICT: 98%
Highs: A graphical powerhouse; immersive, open-ended sandbox that encourages emergent gameplay; well-paced storyline; meticulously detailed; engrossing multiplayer; included map editor.
Lows: Alien enemy AI not as spectacular as North Korean AI; enemies can sometimes absorb too much damage; a few minor glitches
Bottom line: Destined to be a classic, Crysis is a creative and technological marvel that eclipses every other shooter released this year.

I will address the highlighted points.
1. It's not really a graphical powerhouse...SNIP

Lost me, sorry.

LMAO. On low settings too.

I went back and looked at the review list on gamerankings and PC gamer ranked no higher than 20th on the list of scores. On Doom 3 and Half Life 2 it was like 25th or so. So on the distribution of scores they are probably best described as being on the cusp of the top quartile. If you weigh the reviews based on the quality of the source, PC Gamer actually comes out looking even better.

I guess it's easy to criticize them in hindsight, but the data does appear to make them less an outlier than we've made them out to be.

I'm waiting for UT3.

Crysis is the same old thing to you, but UT3 isn't? Not that I don't like the series but they are hardly known for innovation.

to be fair UT3 is more of a competitive shooter whereas Crysis is going to be known for graphics and destructable environments. I don't know of very many people personally who would be playing Crysis for MP.

I suspect that Crysis is going to score 90%+ across the board. Whether it's really all that or not, you'll just have to see for yourself. Opinions will vary.

At least the maps will be mostly free-roam. I hate being railroaded.

On that alone, i call BS on an early review .. BioShock was an above-average ripoff of SystemShock2

*Originally* i would have given given HGL a 89 ... now it's really mid70s :p

who really cares about these "journalists" opinion?

Screw journalists' opinions who get the game free ... i want *your* opinion after paying $50 for it and playing it for 20 hours. ;)

20 hours?
Try 10 at best for the single player.

i want to see if you play it twice:p

:D

if so - it just might be worth it to me

Sure, one hit kills from headshots is included, but apart from that it's incredibly random. I can shoot 10 bullets into a guy and have him live, and then shoot another guys legs 3 times and have him die. Doesn't make much sense really, and kind of reduces the quality of the gameplay.

Now I've only played the demo (think retail comes out later this week here), but I went through this demo after the CoD4 demo. So, like you, I also found that they took a bit too much damage. Seems like headshots take people down pretty quickly though. Otherwise, I spent an entire clip (half went to shooting the corpse) on people unless they were lined up.

Your other points lean more towards nitpicking thay very few games out there feature anyways.

I'm playing the full version on Delta. I'm quite impressed by what I've seen so far. I finished up the demo bit of the story (using a different method this time, taking a boat and bypassing most of the shore patrols. I love it, fourth time through this part of the game, and still a completely different experience :D) and went about 30 mins past where the demo ended. I find the game incredibly immersing, from all the jungle noises to being chased through thick foliage by a group of Koreans, when suddenly the ground drops away beneath me and I find myself flying down the edge of a cliff. After hitting bottom, I was crouched waiting for my suit energy to recharge, when suddenly something came crashing to the ground behind me. It was one of the Koreans who was following me.

Hmmm... I would imagine that the 10 hour estimate is if you burn through it... Sure, I can haul ass through the demo in about 30-40mins if I grab the first jeep with a turret and just run over guys and use the unlimited bullets in the turret gun. But... if I actually take some time to get immersed into the game and explore the different ways to use the suit and gun attachments it takes me 3-4 hours to complete the demo, plus it's A LOT more fun.

It is true that it is very similar to Far Cry, and IMO it is really "Far Cry 2", even though Ubisoft is actually making the supposed 'real' Far Cry 2. The main difference is in the suit though, which changes the game dynamic considerably if you use the suit's functions often...

I've actually completed the demo like 4 times now, trying different tactics each time. All I can say is I can't wait for the game to be released. I was originally going to wait for next generation video hardware, but the demo really hooked me...

******SPOILER IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED THE DEMO********

A weird thing actually happened to me the last time i finished the demo... I got to the beached ship, and none of the other dudes were there. It also didn't go to the cut scene which usually ends the demo, so I used max strength to hop on and over the ship... There wasn't much to do on the other side, but there was some alien-like growling noises and stuff going on along with some dead N. Koreans... Just wondering if anyone else has had that happen.

******END SPOILER************

I'd reckon that's some mighty explosive crap, if it is to be considered greater than the UT series. :p

Not that it matters but IGN gave the game a 9.4/10.

I will be picking it up tomorrow after I apologize to my rig for abusing it.

They say it's about 10 to 15 hours long. It's quite decent I'd say, considering it took me around 8 or 9 hours to finish Far Cry. If they can make each of their new games lengthier I'll be happy. The one thing I can't wait for, more than the actual single-player in the final game are the community's modifications to come, which is the main reason why I'll buy it. I might make a mod myself (well at least I think I'll definitely try, or perhaps something along the lines of a single map with certain objectives, etc).

Im playing the full version now (without playing the demo) and the graphics of which I have preference of FarCry :) I prefer the Farcry graphics (edit:In most areas of the game) and thats a few years old! (Not to mention it runs smoother...). Oh well, something to look forward to in one or two years. (I have a 8800gt)

I have a hard time believing that. Did you cheat or something? Far Cry took me about 15 hours if not more.

Also Gamespot is saying Crysis is about 8-10 hours.

Hmmm, no, I'm quite serious, BUT ... the first time I ever played and finished Far Cry was on the easiest setting, and ... well let's put at it maybe 10 hours, but really no more than that. However, I played it after that on harder settings and it was indeed quite longer due to the tougher fights. But overall I don't think it ever took me any longer than 10 or 11 hours or so. We all have our style of play I guess. In Far Cry I just went straight for the missions and didn't explored anything (not that there was actually anything to explore).

In Crysis I will probably take more time and perhaps retry a few missions with different approaches even if the prior try was successful.

Hmmm nope, see ... I thought saying Far Cry's graphics are "better" than Crysis' was a mere joke on your part. I really thought it was. But you do think it for real ? If that's the case then it sure is one thing: your opinion, but nothing else.

The actual game-play of Far Cry, I will never forget it, it was good, I liked it, and the graphics at its time back 3 years ago were of the same wow-punch, jaw-dropping eye candy you could get on a PC, it was the Crysis of 2004, but now we're in 2007, and there is Crysis to remind Far Cry how old it is. The graphics in Crysis are beyond anything released to date, and saying that Far Cry's graphics are better, in my useless opinion means only two things: 1) Nostalgia for Far Cry clouds and literally blinds your logic and visual comprehension / 2) You're desperately trying your worse to make Crysis look "bad" ...

If you CAN possibly defend your point of view I'm willing to read it and perhaps comment on it, as if it'd change your mind anyways ...

I played the demo and was not very impressed, it seems like a farcry 2 with some fancy suit stuff. It also did not run very well on my laptop, the low graphics setting really sucks. I did like farcry though, and someday in the future when I have a better system I will give this another shot.

I still think Orange Box is better, HL2 episode 2 was awesome and TF2 is my favorite game of the year. Its funny that my old Radeon 9800 pro still works great with orange box.

I played the demo and loved it from the get-go. However it was the Eurogamer review which sold me, and I put in my order for it this morning.

Looking forward to playing the hell out of this.

Crysis let's you explore more, gives you multiple ways to complete. Not forced in the typical one way level ala Half Life. Far Cry 2 will offer this as well.

In the demo you could take the boat out to one of the islands, or drive around the island however you wanted. Go near the battleship and get destroyed by a missle, or have it chase you.

The graphics are way above Far Cry, I built my system 2 years ago when Far Cry was already a year old. I could play fully maxed out, well now of course I can't with Crysis lol, but I can go medium with no AA and get FPS around 16-25 at 1280 x 1024 depending on what is going on. It's no comparison. The demo is full of some glitches, in one scene I had a another humvee appear and I could constantly shoot the Korean gunner in the face and see bullet marks.

I'm not holding this game to the demo, I'm just more worried how the Alien side of the game will be, originality wise that's going to make or break the game.

10 hours sounds about right. Took me 10~11 hours, but partly because at certain points I kept on dying or had to wait ages to regenerate, which was basically time wasted.

10 hour SP is a little disappointing, IMO but there are also a lot of upcoming mods for Crysis and there will be tons of custom SP maps within a month or so... so I'll probably get a lot of mileage out of Crysis.

i can't justify it ... not even for $39.99 with a $10 CC GC
-there are SO MANY great-looking, awesome playing, long games that i have a *choice* - and 7 good games from '05-'07 in my home left to finish
:Q

i am playing HGL right now and loving it ... why would i buy Crysis and just let it "sit" - just like the demo is sitting unplayed and uncompleted?

Unlike MOST games, Crysis looks SO MUCH Better in DX10 then in DX9 it is a crime to play it with details down ... or at 10x7 :p
--in a few months, when i upgrade my e4300 to QC penryn and drop in a 2nd AMD card for 2900xt Xfire, i will pick up a *polished* and fully patched Crysis that is not only optimized to perform well on my system, will have many new mods and an expansion ... and will also be bargain bin
