Graphics aren't unimportant. If a girl (or guy for that matter) does not have a good personality, she sure as heck better have good looks, to attract suitors. If a video game does not have good gameplay, then it should at least have good graphics, to attract buyers.
Not sure about that. You can have a good time with a pretty girl who doesn't have an amazing personality if you don't intend to be serious with her. But I sure as hell am not playing a good looking game that has horrible gameplay.
See, that's the thing about "PC" gamers. They bitch and complain that consoles are "dumbing" down gameplay, but they are always hyping up graphics over everything else. Funny isn't it?
It could be because gameplay is subjective, but graphics are much easier to compare. A PC gamer can always show that a PC game looks superior to a console game. So when a game doesn't look superior, perhaps they feel "cheated" that they have spent all this $$ on their $500 graphics card when they could have played the same game on a console which costs $200.
Still, this serious obsession over graphics is what's contributing to the decline of gameplay quality in PC games imho. At least Blizzard gets it for the time being. Their games have amazing gameplay, screw the graphics. Also look at Angry Birds. That game has sold millions of copies and looks like a**. Yet, the game is more fun than most PC games released last year (or console games for that matter). I mean really is someone going to debate that Crysis is a better game than Super Mario Bros? Sorry, even with 100x better graphics, Crysis will
never be as good as Super Mario Bros....ever. And it's a shame to see so many people discount a game solely based on graphics.
Personally, I would have
loved for Crysis 2 to be a better looking game to showcase what a modern PC can do. But there is no way I am going to discount it based on average graphics alone. I will at least give it a shot, maybe not at $60 though. I still play Starcraft 1 and that game is 2D. What about Fallout 3? That game is pretty fun and has avg. graphics at best.
I think the biggest disapointment is that Crytek themselves created too much hype around the game's engine/graphics. Had they not done so, we would have focused on discussing the gameplay. Yet, when they said they will take Crysis 1's graphics to the next level with Crysis 2 and didn't deliver, we are bound to be disappointed. Whether or not Crysis 2 on its own is a good game is another matter entirely. I think people are blurring the 2 in this thread by equating a good game with a requirement to have excellent graphics.
