I don't think it will have a big effect on home prices. If anything it might make SD seem less desirable in the long run.

There are a LOT of houses on the market, so having a few 100 burn will not have a huge effect. Also most homes that burn will be rebuilt using insurance/state/federal money.

I suspect some of these people will just move. If you have fire insurance, you're good to go. If not... well, southern california real estate is insane.

Apartment renters will probably also stay.

Some are definitely confirmed arson (specifically in the Irvine area), others supposedly started in the wild.

Pretty much confirmed that the SD fires were accidents/natural. It's guessed that the main one was an exploding transformer.

It's amazing how dark it is here right now. It is 2:30 in the afternoon and it looks like the sun just set. I have light on inside my house.

Oh, and work is closed today.

So basically places near wooded areas are only affected, right? These fires can't burn down a city, right?

Depends. The fires in Orange County and North LA (Malibu, Valencia area) have been pretty much wooded areas (or shrubs/weeds). A few homes that are embedded in those areas have gone up in flames. This is the same as the Lake Arrowhead area, where most of the homes are in wooded areas.

The San Diego county fires are different though. From the news reports, the fires are ripping through suburbs and destroying their homes (hence the ~500,000 evacuations).

I'm at Lake Forest and Dimension. I can see the fire from here. :Q

Hehe I'm at Bake and Rancho Pkwy (one light east from Dimension) and they sent us home. Are you at WD?

Edit: Because of the air quality, not the flames.

yes, at western digital. you wanna do lunch sometime?

Is the fire pretty much out in the El Toro Marine Base/Bake Pkwy area?

The only smoke I saw today seemed like it was on the other side of the Whiting ranch hills...

Pic of my car in the driveway at 11AM this morning.

There is no cloud cover today either. The sun is being obscured by smoke making it one of the darkest days I've ever seen here.

Look at all the ash on my car just from sitting in my driveway overnight. I'm not even very close to an evacuation area. I've been shut in my house pretty much all day, no windows open, only going out when absolutely necessary because I don't want to breathe in the soot that is floating around in the air.

Kind of ironic though that when I went to the supermarket this morning there were people sitting outside smoking cigarettes...
