Obviously we're not taking much. What I told them should fit in no more than a duffle bag. I told them to take my car.

And I'm pretty sure Jules is fine. Looking at the map, he's still outside of the evacuation zone. (I think he lives in Oceanside)

So will this be a ritual every 4 years from now on? bleh.

Hope everything is okay with your place and your roommates...it's like hell on earth here right now. I hate it when we get these fires. :(

Another fire broke out in Fairbanks Ranch, a community inside Rancho Santa Fe. This adds more pressure to Del Mar and Carmel Valley, two communities with a lot more residents than RSF.
The Fairbanks Ranch fire is also really close to my home...I'm really really worried now.

Looks like the Irvine coast is still okay... and here I'm practically packed and ready to go if the evacuation is sounded lol

Of course I won't leave unless there is an actual evacuation here, I don't want to add to the congestion.

Hahaha what an awesome question. Did he say that they're building a huge wall?

I was talking to a girl on AIM and she told me about the fires. Then told me she had to go, and thinks the fire spread to her backyard. I hope she is ok.

how about starting some controlled fires on the eastern side of the Sierras? that should suck out all of the oxygen on the eastern side/So Cal, effectively destroying this fire monster!

/mad scientist out.

good luck to all those affected.

I-5 Southbound was packed with firetrucks headed down south today. I even saw northbound firetrucks crossing over the median to make u-turns and head south. So some more help is on the way, at least.

Found out a friend of a friend's house burnt down in Malibu. The air quality is horrendous here too.

I am listening to LA county fire radio channels steaming on the Net right now. They are really dealing with a LOT of crap tonight.

I have seen fire units from about 35 different cities responding tonight down the I-5. I saw a truck from as far away as San Jose (about 400 miles).

This is a big deal...

Some dude that was upside down and facing foreclosure decided to burn down Southern CA so he can collect insurance money. Sad.

I heard one of those big fires was started by the wind. Witnesses saw the wind take down the power lines, which ignited the brush.

Looking at the 0600 MODIS map (linked in my post above), it looks like there was some over night humidity recovery or break in the winds to slow the advance to the west on the San Diego fires. Most of the spread in the last few hours looks like more terrain driven (moving uphill toward the north/northeast). The fire west of Pala spread in all directions. Up toward LA it looks like the fires are still wind driven toward the west.

Edit: 0600 is Mountain Time so 0500 Pacific Time.

This looks worse than 2003. :(
Hope the weather there changes for the better.

Forgive me if this is inappropriate but How will this affect housing prices? Will people be able to get another house at the price of their current? or will they have to relocate? I never once considered fire insurance, but I might now.
