So this nutty lady wants parents to dump their kids off at the playground and leave them there unattended for the day. The columnist says this is a horrible idea 1) because 7 year olds think a cape allows them to fly and 2) because we live in a much more dangerous world today than we did in the 50s-70s, etc. So while she may be correct that it's quite possible bad things could happen if hundreds of unsupervised rugrats are left to their own devices (although outside at a park as long as they don't wander off I imagine there wouldn't be much more than some scrapes and bruises), she plays the whole "I remember the good old days when kids were free to roam the streets and people left their doors unlocked and crime was non-existent. You know, that mythical time that never existed."

Heh, I've left my garage door open overnight and rarely lock my front door. Oddly, the only person this bothers is my mother in law who lives her life in a perpetual state of fear.


Regarding the myth that there was less crime in the past, I personally think that there is just more access to news now.

That's possibly somewhat safe on some of the major lines between the heavily trafficked/policed stations. Maybe.

Not so much for the less active stations. There are some crazy people that ride the subway, and even as an adult there are some crazy situations you don't want to get yourself in.

In the 80s it was perfectly safe for me to walk to 1st grade a half a mile from home, Why wouldn't it be safe for kids to play at a park now? Unless it'sa high crime area or something?

Same here. I don't even know where the keys are to my front door. I'm sure the state trooper squad car parked out front might have something to do with no one around here locking the doors. :sneaky:

Luckily it's still mostly like that where I'm from. I ran around unsupervised most of my childhood. Sure we did some stuff we shouldn't have but for the most part we just ran around and had fun never got in any trouble to caused anyone any issues. I have no problem leaving my house open or my car unlocked/windows down most of the time. It's slowly getting away from this but I think my kids will still have the luxury of being a kid and roaming free, around here anyway.

The kid's a lot safer than you are.
Stabbing a kid is worth maybe the $5 he was saving for the bus and a chocolate bar
Stabbing an adult man or woman who has a job is worth maybe $80 cash plus credit cards.

The only difference between then and now is in 1959 you didn't have multiple news outlets with 24 hours a day of airtime to fill so when a kid turned up missing in Buttscratch, Iowa people in the entire country didn't know about it unless it was someone famous like Charles Lindburgh's kid.

hmm i think they are trying to tell you nicely to pack up and leave....the MIL is moving in!




we rarely lock the doors during the day. but since we had the neighbors from hell live next door for a year we got in the habit of locking them at night.
