Cover songs!

So I'm listening to Pantera's version of Planet Caravan, and it got me to thinking. What cover songs do you think were properly done? What cover songs do you think were butchered beyond repair? My local rock station had a facebook status a while ago, asking the listeners if classic rock bands should allow their songs to be "updated". What say you, OT??

I feel he did a pretty good job on that song. Do you think he did good, or butchered it?

I always liked Metallica's "Turn the Page"

This, plus their cover of 'Whiskey in the Jar'.

Also, I liked Alien Ant Farm's 'Smooth Criminal'.

MTV did a retrospective of Metallica several years ago where they had popular artists do their versions of Metallica tunes. I can't remember which song it was, but Snoop Dogg did one. Avril Levine did 'Fuel' and it really, really reeked.

Good = any of the Van Halen covers

Bad = The Boys of Summer by the Ataris. (not THAT bad, but the original is a master piece)
