I second "Smokin In The Boy's Room" by Motley Crue (original by Brownsville Station)...

In addition, some other good covers:

Gary Hoey - Linus & Lucy (Peanuts theme. Not sure who did the original...There are lots of covers out there under various titles).
Gary Hoey - Wipeout (Beach Boys?)
U2 - Helter Skelter (Beatles)
Stevie Ray Vaughn - Voodoo Chile (Jimi Hendrix). Hendrix' version has more bite; SRV's version is very smooth.
King's X - Manic Depression (Jimi Hendrix?).
Eric Clapton - Hootchie Cootchie Man (Willie Dixon? LOTS of people have covered this song and most versions are very good)

This song is flat out amazing!

Now it takes TALENT to make Madonna not suck. ;) Funny you should mention Rufio, I went to elementry school with the guitarist (Clark).

Although it's a difficult call, my favorite cover is of Neil Young's "Cortez the Killer" by a little old band known as Built to Spill.

:)

Jimmy Buffet - Brown eyed girl (can't remember)

Brown Eyed Girl---- Van Morrison. Buffet isn't even in the same league as Van Morrison. Morrison is a great Blues Ballader and Buffet is a Novelty act at best(Cheeseburger in Paradise) and Buffet even doing a Van Morrison song is an affront to anybody that loves music.

Werd on that shizzle, motha.

Heh, anywho... More Today Than Yesterday - Goldfinger
And probably already listed: All Along The Watchtower - DMB (I'll probably get flamed by red dawn from attempting this jimi original but they did a really good job and might not be better, but still worth mentioning!)
That's a Dylan Original. And we all know that Dave Mathews is the Jimi Hendrix of Rythym Guitar

By the way, wtf does shizzle mean? Is that suppose to be black lingo used by White and Asian wannabes?

haha...I remember that thread about dave being the "jimi hendrix of rhythm guitar" - funny, funny stuff :D

I think (not sure, since I try not to be lame most of the time) that "shizzle" is like when someone wants to say sh!t, but puts an "izzle" at the end. I think it was invented by rappers or something for purposes of rhyming - or something to that effect.

And as for covers, I'd say whenever Eric Clapton covers an old blues tune (like most of the songs on his "From The Cradle" album), he does it very well. :)

Anything performed by Richard Cheese.

'Gin and Juice' by the Gourds (overplayed now, but it grew on me)
'Ms. Robinson' by the Lemonheads
'Shout' by Disturbed

Amen. My brother and I share a huge collection of blues CDs from a lot of obscure people and "purists" want you to believe that only the original artists and obscure artists are the ones who play it best. But Clapton has THE most smooth, universal sound of any blues guitarist I've ever heard. When he covers a song, he plays it exactly the way I WISH I could play it. A lot of those old blues standards have been covered tens of thousands of times.

Dreams(I'll Never See)- covered by Molly Hatchett orig.Allman Bros. song. Two excellent versions and two completely different sounding songs.

Kentucky Woman-Deep Purple covering Neil Diamond. Ya gotta love it!

Little Wing- Stevie Ray covering Hendrix.Awesome.

Rock and Roll- Heart(live) covering Led Zep, kinda cool.

Now, personally I like Dreams by MH a wee bit better. I think Kentucky Woman is a tad better by Deep Purple. Little Wing is as good and Rock and Roll is not as good ,but quite respectable.

Peace

Heh, you're right about that one. Van Morrison is awesome, and Brown Eyed Girl is one of my favorite songs. If they played it on MTV today, I bet it would be in the top 10.

I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but:

Stone Temple Pilots - Dancing Days (Led Zepplin)

Both versions are good, but I do give the STP cover the edge.
