Core i7 wake up call: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T BE overclocked to 6.29GHz!!

"On LN2, naturally

An overclocker going by the stage name Luca has managed to overclock AMD's new six-core T1090 Black Edition to a whopping 6.29GHz.

The 1090T is stock clocked at 3.2GHz and LN2 cooling was used to keep the six cores from burning a hole in the carpet. Interestingly, Luca used an Arsrock 890GX board and 1GB of Kingston memory to pull off this impressive feat.

You can check out the CPU-Z validation here "

Looks like these 6 core Thubans have a ton of OC potential, and performance?? Correct me if I'm wrong people, but did I make a mistake of upgrading to an i7 920?

So far initial benchmarks from Asia show that the Thuban can compete with the i7-920/930. And you didn't make a mistake at the time, because AMD didn't have anything to compete with until now.

Yes you did. You should have upgraded to an i7 980X. Comparing Six cores to Four is comparing Apples to Oranges which a lot of people seem to do lately.

If you want to compare Apples to Apples do everything on the same denominator! Here is the competition:

Apples to apples? I dont think it works like that. We all know that a single intel nehalem/westmere core is more powerful than ones found in thuban. No one is refuting that because its a fact. But the most important part is the pricing of these hex cores, and thats what causes these comparisons.

At $300, it is performing better than i7-920 according to initial benchmarks and is competitive with i7-860/870 (maybe better, we will find out end of this month). Not only that but the OC potentials are quite impressive.

I really do think that intel needs to rethink about their current pricing. I mean, the price jump from 860 to 870 is ridiculous for the performance gain given. Then even more so with gulftown or i7-960/975. I could never understand these exorbitant pricing in the CPU world yet they get away with it because its pretty much a monopoly.

I think I might consider going the AMD route for my upcoming new build if these 6 core thuban CPUs turn out to be great.

exactlly my thoughts. Your i7 920 is a great cpu and when you bought it AMD had no answer for it. Now it looks like Thuban can challenge i7 entry level (920, 860, 870 and 930). Can't wait for the official reviews and those oc's out there are looking really good.

I'll reserve judgment until these things actually PROVE themselves like the 930/930 already have. Reading a handful on online reviews does not a good chip make.

The question isn't which is the best hex-core, it's which is the best ~$300 processor 😉

I have to agree here. Trying to compare a $1000 processor to a $300 one is like trying to compare a Ferrari to a RX-8

True, im seriously considering one of these, whereas gulftown is wayyy out of my price range

unlocked multiplier too for $300 🙂

I thought I would hold out until Bulldozer, but I think I'm going to pick up a couple of 1090T Thubans and retire my 775 quad-cores. Wonder if I can get them to 4Ghz, on the included cooler?

Well I still have the brand new LGA 1366 motherboard in it's packaging, I also am awaiting shipment due very soon for my DDR3 6GB and i7 920...Should i wait for some reviews till the end of the month and sell the i7/mobo? :sneaky: 😀

I would at this point - I know I'm getting a Thunan at launch to upgrade the wife's rig (eg, I need an excuse to get one 😛 ). Still the 920 is a great chip, hard to go wrong with it.

But what processor can you upgrade to after the 920/930? For the money, is the 975, 980X worth it? Look at how AMD has allowed AM2+/AM3 mobo owners to upgrade to hex-core (granted that the mobo manufacturer has updated their BIOS), and for less compared with Intel.

Why would you base anything off of LN2 suicide runs?

I would be basing off air/water cooling and at voltage that is within spec.

These are not new cores, so we have a pretty good idea what they will do already.

If Intel ever felt threatened by this chip, they would just release a locked hexa-core at non xtreme-series prices (which they are doing anyway.)

Same architecture, but not exactly the same cores. AMD has improved its process technology by introducing low-k dielectric material. This has reduced leakage, in turn dropping power consumption and reducing heat. This isn't just deneb with 2 more cores or instanbul for desktop, and this explains how we're getting 6 3.2Ghz cores for the same 125W as 4 3.2Ghz deneb cores.

Knowing that, I believe 4.0Ghz overclocks will be possible on these, just as it is with Deneb processors.

We shall find out shortly (don't take me wrong, i do agree with what you said)

Personally I hope AMD starts to put pressure on Intel again. Intel has delayed Tick/Tock due to the lack of competition.

Now how the hell can something perform better then a 920 but competitive to a lesser model 870?

Im sorry, but a 920 will smash this processor.

IF your going a full on platform upgrade, and u have a sizable budget, AMD is not the path for you.

IF your already on an AM2/AM3 platform, then this T1090 will be a very nice upgrade.

But i bet you a 920 will smash it in all benchmarks once both are overclocked to its full potential (on air or water or Sub Zero even), and it wont be a close match either.

The X58 first off is a MUCH better platform, then ATI or Nvidia chipset.
But since its intel's X platforms, and not P, its also MUCH more expensive.

The X58 once again is a better platform which offers the user options of BOTH SLI + Xfire on 1 board.
The X58 i would say is a more solid board then what ATI or Nvidia can make because Intel boards have always been solid and kick ass. Example... (P945 P965 X38 X48 .. ) The X58 only continues intel's long list of great board platforms.

Unless you really want a hexcore.. then intel will offer a 970X soon to u guys @ im hearing rumors of 600-700 range... why not wait for the 970X?

Sorry but questions like this become a bait for me...
It makes no sense to go from an i7 -> AMD unless u needed funds.

I really do think that intel needs to rethink about their current pricing. I mean, the price jump from 860 to 870 is ridiculous for the performance gain given. For every 1 dollar they make off the average user like you... they make 10 dollars to every 1 dollar in the enterprise sector.
So they can really care less about the consumer prices especially when they have no real competition.
T1090 is not a competition for Intel, and not even close because of the soon to come out 970X + the current 980X.

The moment u though AMD was competiting against intel for performance, you thought wrong.
AMD is trying to beat intel in Value not performance.

And performance doesnt come cheap.

What's everybody excited about? I have a quad core 3.5ghz chip, I don't need 50% more cores. I probably won't be upgrading this till at least bulldozer.

LOL, I wonder why? I bought my 920 in 11/2008 and AMD has released nothing competetive until this hexacore was announced. I still doubt this 6-core chip will OC as reliably to 4-4.5ghz as the 920/930 does, and the question is if it still will match it with performance.
