I had good luck with those G.Skill 4-4-4-12 on a DS3. Ran upto 850 on 4-4-4-12 24 hours orthos stable. 425x8.

Geil ultra = Micron 100% all the time. Just pay careful attention to the model GX21GB6400PD and GX22GB6400PDC are The D9 based memory and GX21GB6400U is the Elpida.

Now Newegg lists these as ultra but posts a screenshot of the non ultra part.

reread my post I edited it a bit. I don't trust newegg to give accurate information because you don't know the part number so it's hard to say whether you're buying the D9 Ultras or not.

Keeping all this in mine lets assume it's elpida. You have a chance to get promos with the cas4 G.Skill which is alot better than elpida.

Right, that's why you can always spend a little more and get Crucial or Team or G.Skill HZ, or Buffalo Firestix, or a vast selection of other choices that do guarantee Micron D9 ICs. They are more expensive like I said.

Thx for the help. I do realize D9's are suppose to be good/the best but I have to get the budget stuff. To be honest I just need some 800mhz memory. I was just wanting to get the budget set thats likely to give me the better o/c.

Unfortunately overclock and budget don't really follow hand in hand with memory. There's Promos that can do DDR2-900 at 5-5-5-12 and some that won't pass 801 at 5-6-6-18. Then just about every Micron you buy will do DDR2-1000. Some at cas4 some at cas5.

Ok I did some digging and here's what I found. The Geil Ultra is Elpida rated at 4-4-4-12. Previously this was listed as just Geil DDR2-800 but now they put it in orange heatspreaders and call it ultra. Why? Here's why. They also sell the Ultra 800+ sticks with Micron D9 rated at 3-3-3-8. They basically put the slower stuff in clothes that make them look like the better stuff. Probably to sorta trick people who didn't know the difference.

Now, both sets use handpicked ICs. One is handpicked Elpida and one is handpicked Micron.

They have the Geil Ultra 800+ in stock for $230.14

These are handpicked Micron D9GMH rated at DDR2-800 3-3-3-8

Call to verify stock and specify the product number GX21GB6400PDC

Although this is a 1GB kit it's the best I could find for this type of memory. Maybe it's all out of stock.

note: the 2GB kit of this stuff sells for $460

Too bad all the *Crucial 10th Anniversary are sold out then.

Edit: Corsair and Crucial have names that are too similar! Fight to the death!

yeah, the only way to get it is to buy used. If I could get hold of some cheap Micron based PC2-8000 parts then I would consider selling this 10th anniversary set. However, I'm unwilling to pay these prices.

That sounds real expensive for the 1GB kit. Couldn't you go a guaranteed Micron 2GB kit like Patriot? (same price AFTER $35 rebate)?

I must be missing something.

EDIT: Thanks cmdrdredd for pointing out below that the mentioned Patriot is no longer Micron. There are other alternatives for another $25 though... see post below

Personally, I think any stable DDR2 667 + is going to kick ass w/o overclocking. I'll never know for sure if it was justified, but I splurged (IMO) to high end bang-for-buck with Super Tallent.

With overclocking and system demands in a year or two, I think it will be worth it. But right away, it either way should be far more than I need.

PS - see the build I bought yesterday on the 13th post of this thread.

Patriot IS NOT Micron any more. Do also realize that this memory is 100% hand picked. Yu're paying for the best of the best of each IC in each stick. Being rated at cas3 means alot too.

Yeah, your right about Patriot, I forgot. Sorry. I hadn't heard of the cas3 before. Kind of glad I all ready bought my ram so I don't have to worry about it :)

Still though, it seems far from budget by any means at that price thought. Maybe it's just me. Guess if it's better to have 2x512MB Micron and cas3 than 1x1GB Elphida, then your case makes sence. Probably depends on what your doing with your computer. OC and games, maybe (really don't know, thought about asking before). Photoshop-ish stuff, doubtfully (lots of ram good). But if you argue that the the $230 ultra 1x512MB is only $30 more than non-micron 1x1GB, you could argue that yet another $25 for 1x1GB Mircon super-talent is worth it.

I know you know what your talking about cmdrdredd. What I'm posting is just my thoughts.

The Kit that he listed is Elpida..... But...the Kits that Y-man has listed is confirmed Micron D-9...

Was kind of a broad statement...... hehehe

I lost track of what was going on. Just kind of gave up. Any new questions beyond this post I will do my best to answer. For anything above this I believe it is answered so far.

1 GB Kit, 2 GB Kit, Elipida, Promos, D9GKX, D9GMH, Fatbodies. FTW!
