Ticket Quotas

Upon being named acting police chief in Wayne, New Jersey, Donald Southamer issued a directive calling on his officers to issue more speeding tickets. He recently made the directive specific, ordering each officer to issue at least 144 citations per year.

And cops wonder why the public is more and more against them.

this is like crying "entrapment!"

if they are giving tickets to people that are not speeding, then a problem exists

if they are giving tickets to people that are speeding, then i don't see a problem

I don't think I have to worry too much in my county - stupid spring breakers breaking the law bring in a decent cash flow for us ;)

If speed limits were set in a consistent way then I would agree with you.

Yes and no. The laws are there to protect the drivers and those around them. If there is no endangerment to anyone, then it's just enforcing a law for the law's sake.

I tend to agree, but giving specific quotas that need to be met ends in people that aren't speeding getting tickets or officers giving out random infractions to people that just happen to be driving through.
The police force has become more and more a revenue collection service than a body meant to fight crime, and I think that is just plain wrong.

I just hate when they set up camp in places they know are confusing to drivers just because they know they can get fast easy money.

Only 12 a month? I dont consider that to be outrageous.

In your daily driving can you spot 12 cars a month that deserve a ticket?

i can spot 12 cars each way to work (twice a day - one hour/45 miles each way) that are speeding or whatever

Ummmm... officers protect the general public. Don't hate, appreciate.
I don't like tickets as much as the rest of people, but if you break the law by speeding and being a risk on the road (which most people who are constantly ticketed are), then don't go complaining about it.

You only have one police officer in your city?

... each officer to issue at least 144 citations per year ...

Hell, I can spot 12 a day :p

- M4H

Easily..

Officers up here tend to write a lot of warnings anyway..not so many tickets as (apparently) they do elsewhere.

Thats one of the problems they talk about int he story I linked to.

"Already officers have told me they feel they have issued tickets they normally would not have in order to keep up with department requirements."

Doesn't bother me one damn bit. Am I allowed to write tickets? Are you? Then, who the hell is supposed to do it? Should I have to obey traffic laws while you travel at any speed you damn well please? Who exactly is supposed to decide that conditions are right for you to ignore speed limits? Some of our members are sofaking retarded, I can't imagine how they figured out how to register!
