"Police are nothing more then a money machine for the goverment then they are to protect us."

Has no one else realized that this sentence makes no sense?

Substantively, this assertion is not true - the police carry many important roles in our society beyond helping to finance the government: beyond all the work they actually do, their presence provides a continuing deterrant effect to would-be wrongdoers. That alone should carry a much higher value than we give it credit.

While I am not a huge advocate of the administration of punishment and policing as it stands, I realize that it is a very functional and adaptive social service. Maybe people just don't realize what a difference it makes in our society.

Like most sin taxes, speeding tickets are a "win-win" scenario for politicians, especially since blame can easily be placed on the police force rather then the politician that decided to generate revenue that way.

Here's an obvious answer you probably overlooked...just don't speed. See, I've never received a speeding ticket, nor will I ever, because I drive the limit. Wow...brainstorm there...I should really be a neuro-surgeon or something.

but give me a ticket for a 'rolling stop' at midnight when there were no other cars on the road (that happened to me a couple years ago)? now i'm finding it hard to accept the cops and i are on the same side.

Why not? Just because it is late and you think no one esle is around does that mean you should then be able to roll stop signs? I guess you weren't the only on on the road since the cop saw you, huh? I realize the police have discretionary power whether to issue a citation, a warning, or simply tell you to be careful but breaking the law is just that so if you disobey the law don't get mad when you have to pay the price. If you are young as in a teenager then you are right....the cops are not on your side :D but for the most part as an adult how you act once stopped has a lot to do with whether you get a citation or not in a lot of cases. How you look has a great deal to do with your chances of getting a citation also. If you are a ricer then give it up, or if you look like a scumbag.

In some places, cops issue a lot of nuisance tickets, in other places, they don't. I think of that as a quality of life issue. I think the number of tickets per officer should be part of any good quality of life survey.

I agree. But what town wants it to be known that every cops average X number of tickets yet the average for the state is 1/2 of X. Would give the town a bad image. Of course that would be a good thing for those that are moving or driving through a place. Tells them what the police number 1 job is, either money tickets or safety.

When you took your driving test and supposedly studied for the written portion, where in the book did it say you're allowed to break traffic rules/laws if it's late at night? If you can show this, then you're right, the cop was a d!ck. If not, STFU and pay your ticket for your screw up :)

I agree in part with both of you. The officer was in no way protecting anyone in that context by giving you a ticket. However, he was doing his job, and you weren't doing yours as a responsible driver. In the end, justice defaults on you being guilty here.

That's 12 tickets a month. That's not that many. You can easily get that in a week.

Edit: If a cop ISNT getting 12 tickets a month, I'd be more concerned about the cops NOT doing their jobs and serving the public.

The reason you got the ticket is because the police officer has to justify the time spent on his shift. I know the Tennessee Highway patrol does not have a quota, but if they end thier shift with no tickets written they will be in trouble. For instance they get something like 1 hour credit for a speeding ticket, 2.5 hours for a wreck, etc.

The police officer that gave you a ticket probably wanted to go get a donut so he wrote a 5 minute ticket and got to take a break.

So we are paying him not to support safety, but Krispy Kreme?

Woman admits to causing fatal crash

Blame the system
I don't know what those links have to do with this discussion, but that woman only gets minimum 2 years and max 8 years in prison? Her DL COULD be suspended for the rest of her life? How about like minimum 10 years and no DL ever again. WTF

frankly, if half the illegal things that drivers in Israel do would be punished, it would be a tremendous achievment. in Israel, the drivers are so aggresive that we have and average of 10-20 people die a weekend due to accidents. drivers make dangerous manuvers and zigzag through traffic; they pass you in a place were they can't see oncoming vehicles coming their way...accidents like these are so dangerous!
police should be more aggresive, but ordering your officers to issue atleast 144 tickets a year, that's a bit extreme.

I just hate when they set up camp in places they know are confusing to drivers just because they know they can get fast easy money.

yup

I don't like tickets as much as the rest of people, but if you break the law by speeding and being a risk on the road (which most people who are constantly ticketed are), then don't go complaining about it.

They are two different things. You can drive your car over the speed limit without being a risk on the road. And viceversa.

I feel comfortable driving at 80, grandma doesn't. There is no problem if grandma drives in the right lanes.

Don't cut people off and dont weave in traffic. That is what is unsafe. Not the act of driving faster than some speed limit.

Most traffic tickets are nothing more than a revenue generator for the state and local governments. The insurance companies profit too when they get to raise the rates on someone because they got a speeding ticket or two.

Awhile back Geico bought out a struggling company that made laser speed guns for law enforcement. They then proceeded to "donate" a large number of laser speed monitoring devices to local departments where there was a high number of Geico insured drivers, with the only stipulation being that the officers use the donated guns to write so many tickets per month. The whole reason behind this was to hopefully get more Geico drivers ticketed, so Geico could raise their rates and get much more of a return long term from the jacked rates then they ever lost giving away the laser guns...

Yeah,
telling cops to do their jobs better is bad? All us of speed and all of us are very well aware that if cops sees you speed, you'll get a ticket. The police chief is just telling the cops not to sleep at their job.

In either case though, speeding ticket is really paying for getting somewhere quicker. I'm sure you guys can figure out how much time you save by speeding and use that to figure out how much it costs you per minute/hour saved ($ticket/ time saved) - if it's worth it to you, speed. If not, drive at the limit.
