Has no one else realized that this sentence makes no sense?
Substantively, this assertion is not true - the police carry many important roles in our society beyond helping to finance the government: beyond all the work they actually do, their presence provides a continuing deterrant effect to would-be wrongdoers. That alone should carry a much higher value than we give it credit.
While I am not a huge advocate of the administration of punishment and policing as it stands, I realize that it is a very functional and adaptive social service. Maybe people just don't realize what a difference it makes in our society.
