He didn't say why he originally pulled you over? I'm pretty sure they need a reason to pull you over, and so his ticket for expired registration is invalid. But you'll get that dismissed when you renew your registration, so it doesn't really matter.

I still have to pay the $54 fine, but I have no problem paying it, I was guilty of that. I just don't know why he pulled me over.

You can't get the fine waived by showing your current registration?

Why would he be able to? His registration WAS expired at the time the ticket was issued. Whether or not he gets it renewed now makes no difference. At the time he was pulled over he was not in full compliance with the law, hence the ticket.

In most states, expired insurance, registration and inspection can all be dismissed for a $10 court fee when you show them your present valid documents.
That's strange. Why would they do that?
I know that Failure to Exhibit Documents can be waived if you show them the document later, like if you left your license at home or something.

Which I do. But there's no sense in calling in favors for $54. :)

I don't know if that's true.
Either way, I'm not gonna take a day off work and fight for $54. I'd end up losing money.

Asks for my license, registration and insurance card. I give him everything and ask if I was speeding. No answer. He looks at my registration and points out that it expired at the end of June. I had gotten the letter from the DMV but completely forgot about it. Yes, I am guilty of driving with an expired reg. He goes to his car and writes me a ticket for an expired registration and that's it. He had no way of knowing my reg. was expired before he pulled me over. I have no clue why he pulled me over.

Um, you have registration tabs on your car, right? It should say the month & year that they expire, correct? If we see that the tabs are expired we can stop you. It's one of the easiest tickets to write. Even if you don't have expired tabs displayed, we can run your plates through the in-car computer and see when the registration expires.

Expired registration tabs are all the PC that's necessary to stop.

Yeah, but I don't think he was able to see that when he pulled out from the side of the road.

I was under the impression that the registration in his state was not displayed on the windshield.

And don't you think running someone's plates for info without any reason represents a violation of the citizens' rights?

He did. They have eagle eyes for those stickers.

They are on the license plate, a tiny little sticker.

The tabs are probably color-coded. All you need to see is what color they are and you know when they expire. It really only takes a passing glance.

I was probably 100 feet away, going 45 mph at night.

I'd guess that most cops could spot that sort of thing at 100 yards. They're colored, reflective, and glow in the dark.

The tabs are generally on the plates.

Not really. The citizen will never know unless they have a warrant or suspended license, which means they'll be going to jail. There's nothing else we're going to find by running a random plate, which would cause a police-citizen interaction.

If we're running to find expiration we already have a reason, because we can see the tabs and are just checking to confirm.

Once you get used to looking for them you can pretty much spot an expired tab without even looking. You see a quick flash of a certain color out of the corner of your eye and you know it's expired.

Pffft...try driving a red modified Mustang...

I get pulled over so much, I usually just pull over, turn the engine off, roll down my window, and pull out my registration and license as soon as I see them turn around or pull out. They always ask me why I pulled over so soon...I just tell them 9 times out of 10 they are coming for me... :p

Just because they don't know you're doing it doesn't make it right. That's like running from house to house peaking in windows, looking for something illegal.

But whatever.

Say you get pulled over, and the cop is asking their usual questions, and you tell them you have a warrant. They ask what for, and you say assault with a deadly weapon, or something to that effect. Now you've totally made this up, and have no warrants. Nor have you done anything wrong, aside from going 15mph over the speed limit, which is why he pulled you over. How much time is he going to spend looking for this warrant before letting you go. Is he going to take you to jail on your own word?

That's really apples and oranges...

If you told me that I'd run 29's (warrant checks) on you right there. It'd take about 20 seconds to find out if you had a warrant or not. We run 29's on everyone we stop anyway.

And so nothing comes up, you just figure "Oh, this guy made it up." And let him go? What it was from out of state or something? Just figure you've looked into enough, done your job, etc?

All we have to do is radio dispatch and give them the name & DOB of the person and they check everywhere. Fed, state, county, local, whatever. It's all run at once.

Hehe, true from a certain standpoint...

Yes, you drive a black car that looks sporty! Just like Insane3D (the "PullMeOver Red" club), you're now paying dues in the "HarassMePlease Black" club.

With my prior car, I was a completely stock appearing red Eclipse... no aggressive driving yet total cop bait. Now I've switched to stock appearing black Talon... still cop bait. Pulled over for "looking fast" and was grilled about my FACTORY front bumper.

I'm curious, if the cop misrepresents the law(s) in his state, what happens? I know that cops have given loud muffler, tinting, and other "fix it" tickets to my friends in NY and they're instantly dismissed when challenged with a "fix" in court. This is despite some cops saying you don't get out of it if you fix the violation.

I got a ticket like 3 or 4 days ago, and as the cop was walking away, I said "Your headlight's out." He turned around and bellow "WHAT?!" Like I had said "Your mother's a whore." I then say "You see how all your lights are flashing except that headlight? It's out." He said, "yeah, it does that," and walked off.

47 in a 30, what a jip. I looked at the fine schedule for this city though, it's like a budget ticket. $68 for a ticket. LOL. I can't remember the last time I had a ticket under $200.
