And don't you think running someone's plates for info without any reason represents a violation of the citizens' rights?
No, it's not. License plates are the property of the state, and the state controls the records associated with such property. They can call up driving records at any time. By registering your car with the NJ Department of State, ThePresence consented to such searches.

Maybe not in your state, but here in SC, the Month/Year the registration expires is a sticker I have to put on my license plate each year. I've gotten pulled over by cops for that exact reason.

He didn't say why he originally pulled you over? I'm pretty sure they need a reason to pull you over, and so his ticket for expired registration is invalid. But you'll get that dismissed when you renew your registration, so it doesn't really matter.

I still have to pay the $54 fine, but I have no problem paying it, I was guilty of that. I just don't know why he pulled me over.

You can't get the fine waived by showing your current registration?

It depends on the cop in my state. One time the Cop said show up to court with your new registration and I will waive this. The other time the cop told me I had to pay the fine no matter what.

In Virginia, one of the more conservative state when it comes to traffic violations, I got pulled for expire inspection, and running the red light ( more like yellow but hey, it's my fault).

show up in court with the new inspection proof, got that dismissed with NO court cost.
judge also gave me traffic school due to my spotless record for running the red light. (took the class on-line too)

I used to get pulled over an average of once a month when i was 17-18ish ... was in high school in S. FL.

Pulled over, car searched ... asked 1000 questions ... told I was lying ... then let go with no tickets because I wasn't even doing anything.

I was even handcuffed one time during a stop! ... @@

where in central jersey do you live? 200 miles a day is a lot. and I cant see why cops would be attracted to your car. its not flashy, its not a coupe, its not a bright color, its a family sedan.

My car

Driving home with a girl after a fine dinner (no alcohol consumed). I'm doing 45 in a 50 zone. I pass a cop, see him pull out behind me. Pulls me over. Asks for my license, registration and insurance card. I give him everything and ask if I was speeding. No answer. He looks at my registration and points out that it expired at the end of June. I had gotten the letter from the DMV but completely forgot about it. Yes, I am guilty of driving with an expired reg. He goes to his car and writes me a ticket for an expired registration and that's it. He had no way of knowing my reg. was expired before he pulled me over. I have no clue why he pulled me over.

Um, you have registration tabs on your car, right? It should say the month & year that they expire, correct? If we see that the tabs are expired we can stop you. It's one of the easiest tickets to write. Even if you don't have expired tabs displayed, we can run your plates through the in-car computer and see when the registration expires.

Expired registration tabs are all the PC that's necessary to stop.

if you are talking about those little stickers you are supposed to stick in the corner of your liscense plate...those arent required in NJ anymore. IIRC.

Man, you Americans make it sound like there are cops everywhere!

Two years of spirited driving in my Beretta and I've been pulled over once. For a burnt headlight. No ticket, no warning, he just let me know I have a burnt out headlight.

Once a month is crazy

Is that new? B/c they were required when I moved out of the state in 2004. In fact they had only been in use 3-4 years.

if your state uses the same method they issue license plate #, I beg one of your plate number is 6. And thats how they can tell your registration expires in June.
