Your daughter drops one of her midol pills on the floor and the cop wants to hold you until they figure out what it is. It could be meth or something!

I don't think that would hold up in court and in the UK the police have the right (as they should) to search your car.

Here in Honolulu, if the Cop can hear your stereo from 30 feet away - not loud, just hear - they can cite you for a noise violation (I successfully prosecuted some poor kid for this while in law school...cop was driving on the opposite side of a four lane street, heard the kids stereo as he was parked on the other side of the road waiting to pick up his GF, copp pulled around and cited him. Judge found the kid guilty.

Indeed. You need to be very explicit when speaking legally. That includes police as well as judges and lawyers. Don't give a "well, maybe, sort of" answer. Give a firm yes or no. I do not give consent to a search.
