back at UCSB(University of California, Santa Barbara), we had something called a BUI, Biking Under the Influence. It called for a one year driver;s license suspension in addition to a night in jail.

Umm...what if your like 15 and don't have a drivers license...or even older without one???? Is it required to have a drivers license now to bike???

I got a ticket while riding my bike and had to go to court (while I was in h.s.) So I was actually forced to miss class :|

I'm betting not in any state. Bikes must follow the same rules of the road as motor vehicles for the most part. I'm stunned by the number of you in this thread that didn't know that.

<< IT was a nice night to go biking, at this time of night there's no traffic be it motor vehicle traffic, pedestrians or other cyclists. Really nice to go biking.. anyways I'm going down this road and then the road hits a highway and turns into a one-way access road. I'm going the wrong way down and I can't exactly cross the highway so I decide to play it safe and go on the sidewalk. Or so I think. There's a minivan cop car that drives by and puts on the flashers and stops me. Asks me for ID, drivers license (don't got one), ask what I'm doing, where I work etc... turns out one of the cops is a friend of a girl at the place I work! Anyway they didn't ticket me, perhaps cause of that. But they warned me "stay off the sidewalk, we can ticket you for that" and then they left and I did. I stuck on the sidewalk till I got off the one-way on the next street then I biked down to the river and went back home. I was pissed for getting stopped and relieved that I didn't have to pay a ticket. I don't have headlights or a helmet or any of that crap either, but they didn't say anything about that. heh... >>

Was it in downtown area? Most municipal codes prohibits bicycle riding on sidewalk in downtown area. Riding on sidewalk is a moot point. Drivers wants bikes off the road and pedestrians wants bikes off the sidewalk. I guess my best answer is use your best judgement. I'd ride on sidewalk in suburbs so I'm out of drivers way whose going 45, but in downtown area cars are slow and sidewalk is pedestrian crowded, so I'd say it's safer to ride on the road in proper direction.

Anyways, I think you deserved the warning. Being on a bicycle doesn't mean you can disobey the rules of road. It's very dangerous when bicyclist rides the wrong way, because turning cars assumes(rightfully) nobody will come from the wrong way behind the wheels. They'll look for slow moving pedestrians, but not bicycles, motorcycles, skateboards, etc going 15-20mph going the wrong direction.

<< i got pulled over on a bike once for riding in a parking lot around a shopping center where it said no bikes. the cop just told me to leave >>

Someone dared my friend and I to ride our bikes in our school's main hall so we did it :D:D. We chose a day when regular staffs wasn't there. It was around 7PM and they were having a basketball game. It was in middle of the game so everyone was in the gym. The event coordinator saw us and screamed at us "get your ass back here!, I need to talk to you guys!". My other friend held the door open and we ran quick enough so we were never identified :D :D.

I know too many people that were hit and killed from behind riding their bikes going the same flow as cars. I will never ride the same flow as cars, you have a whole lot better chance of survival on a bike if you can see what is coming, those people didn't even know what hit them. Who is the idiot that mandated that a 2,000 lb car and a bike share the same lane at the same time anyway?

>>This thread is confusing... I havn't biked since I was a kid but I learned how to bike on a sidewalk. We also solely rode our bikes on sidewalks, did not need to register, and didn't follow the speedlimit. We didn't stop at stop signs or anything like that. I thought those were all things you follow if you were using your bike as a car (driving in a lane, etc)?

Is there a point in your life when your bike turns into a car and you need a license plate, have to register, need a front light, must be wearing a helmet, can't ride on sidewalks, must stop for stop signs no matter where you are, can't bike in a parking lot, and can't bike too fast? If so, I'm glad I stopped while I was ahead. <<

I grew up in New York, way too many cars in the road all the time and no room for bikes, we had to stay on the sidewalks if we wanted to live and ride a bike.

Exactly, part of the whole Police state garbage going on all over here. Control to the point of killing life itself. If you people are getting and paying tickets for that stuff, I'd fight them, it's either fight or sounds like accept the fact that bikes are for all practicalities an outlawed way of getting around.

Technically they can ticket you for All the same things as a motorist(where I live anyways) I've heard of tickets for not observing stop signs, failing to observe posted speed limit, DUI(on this point, you can be ticketed for having an open container if you drink a beer while walking) There have been tickets locally for riding at night without lights, hell it's even illegal to be stop by the police and not have I.D. on you here ;) Of course they don't enforce these laws on most cyclist, most of the time, but occassionaly they will.

all this reminds me of the Andy Griffith episode with the spoiled kid. Barney stops the kid for biking on the sidewalk. Next time it happens to any of y'all, just address the police officer as deputy Fife, that should get some kind of rise out of them.

hello... it was 2 AM!! And no, I wasn't in a downtown area. I was in a suburban area. You really think I'm gonna go onto the HIGHWAY or go on the road the WRONG way instead of going on the sidewalk? hell no... I think that cop was just bored and used it as an excuse to stop me to see if I was drunk or whatever...
