<< isn't it a law you can't get points on your license or even fines for traffic violations anyways, if you're on the company clock? >>

Doubtful, otherwise everyone would start their own "businesses";), and claim they were on company time when pulled over.

<< they gave me a citation for not having my bike registered. >>

Since when are you required to have your bicycle registered? I never heard of it being required on a college campus either, only automobiles.

I know at Mich. St. They make you register your bike. It's supposed to be for when your bike gets stolen, which happens alot (not as much as bike vandalism though). I haven't heard of getting any tickets over not registering though.

I think @ UC Davis you are required to register. This is when they hand you the "Rules". Can't go faster than 15mph, blah blah blah. Ex went here.

I know fo' sure @ USC they make you register it. I go here.

I got stopped when I was about 12-13 years old because I matched the description of a kid blowing up mailboxes with explosives. Nevermind I was 70 miles away from the town it was happening in, but I had the same coat / bike ect. so it must have been me.

things like that annoy me. Good to hear you did not get a ticket. I would have probably become verbaly abusive, and gotten another ticket :D

I've never heard of this nonsense!!!! If a cop ever tried to pull me over, I'd just ride into the woods or something. What are they gonna get my license plate number?

Utterly ridiculous.

This thread is confusing... I havn't biked since I was a kid but I learned how to bike on a sidewalk. We also solely rode our bikes on sidewalks, did not need to register, and didn't follow the speedlimit. We didn't stop at stop signs or anything like that. I thought those were all things you follow if you were using your bike as a car (driving in a lane, etc)?

Is there a point in your life when your bike turns into a car and you need a license plate, have to register, need a front light, must be wearing a helmet, can't ride on sidewalks, must stop for stop signs no matter where you are, can't bike in a parking lot, and can't bike too fast? If so, I'm glad I stopped while I was ahead.

I had a teacher in 4th grade that got a speeding ticket on his bicycle. Considering that bicyclists have the same rights as an automobile driver and they are on the streets, why shouldn't they be given tickets for disobeying the law?

I'm not living on a campus or anything, but is a police station a good place to go to find out the bike laws? do they have a brochure or something?

I see you live in Wisconsin (I went to college in Madison - go Badgers!). If this is correct, you can see a synopsis of the bicycling laws here, or here.

They don't have the same rights as an automobile driver. Sure, that's what everyone tells you but it doesn't work that way in real life. Try seeing how often you get your right of way at an intersection on a bike. Most transportation systems are heavily discriminatory against bikes and rather people herd themselves in buses or drive. Montreal's more balanced, in that it's relatively easy to do all three but there are still parts of the city where it is very dangerous to be on a bicycle.

Heh, good stories. I was riding with about half a dozen friends on Washington Bulvd. above 395 one day going by the Pentagon and we wanted to cross over to go south on GW parkway so we figured we'd cut across the North Pentagon lot, but we sped past a checkpoint that we didn't see. So about 100 yards later three DOD police cards come up, frisk our backpacks, and us then separate us and ask us what we were doing. 15 minutes later we were let go. Nothing interesting, but it was a good antidote to up my post count. ;)

In Iowa Bikes have to follow the same rules as cars. A bike can have the right of way. The only place bikes are not allowed is where posted and on the interstates.

back at UCSB(University of California, Santa Barbara), we had something called a BUI, Biking Under the Influence. It called for a one year driver;s license suspension in addition to a night in jail.

HAha I got stopped on my bicycle twice. Once on the way to school and the other, on my campus.

I got stopped because I was riding on the sidewalk, even though there weren't any people around. The cop was on a motorcycle, and looked rather intimidating with his sunglasses on. What was funny was that he rode his motorcycle on the sidewalk....as if that isn't more dangerous idiot.

He then proceeded to question me and make me say outloud to him that yes I was riding my bicycle on the sidewalk and yes I wasn't supposed to do that.

Then I got stopped riding my bicycle on my college campus because my college campus has the bright idea of placing bicycle cages (places where you can lock your bike that require a key to enter first) in the middle of the campus. So they expect you to walk your bike to the bike cages...haha yeah, sorta defeats the purpose or bringing my bike.

If you had been a black man on a bike pulled over by the cops under all the same circumstances in Los Angeles, you would have been detained, handcuffed, beaten, taken to jail, booked, spent three days in jail and then kicked out without an apology.

I take it that you aren't black or live in L.A.
