Cop taped making fun of murder victim

Now, we are all allowed to be a douche or act like an asshole like that, this is a free country. should officers be held to a different standard like those teachers who are getting fired for their revealing picture on myspace in their own home?

are they always on duty even off duty? Is there a line we measure how far is too far?

If the police department had to fire everyone who cracked a joke about a murder victim, I don't know if we'd have enough policemen left on duty. But maybe he did go too far.

I don't have a strong opinion on this yet. what do you guys think?

i think people should be free to joke about and talk shit about anything they want. race religion death .....nothing is off limits.

Agreed.

I don't think teachers should be automatically fired for things they do outside of teaching, and the same applies here. Maybe I'd think differently if this guy was on the job and making these comments directly to people affected by the murder. But on his own time? No big deal. Some people have to be able to joke about these things in order to handle them.

He's off duty and drunk. He's entitled to his opinion, he wasn't representing the town or the police force at the time, so why should he be taken to task for this? Tasteless yes but resign from his job? Screw the NAACP

This.

I've been saying This a lot. I'm getting lazy.

Off duty. It's his private life.

Without even bothering to watch the video: almost everyone reading this thread has said something equally tasteless and offensive at some point, and many of us have posted something worse to ATOT.

umm no, wrong.

Hmm, I want to agree that off duty it's his private life, but even off duty cops are still allowed to shoot people. You gotta give up something for privs like that.

but nah, I've got the darkest sense of humor ever.. I can't find it in me to give a shit about what someone else thinks is funny.

I don't think it's right at all that he's being punished. But we are all representatives of our employers even when not at work and your conduct should reflect that.

Wrong! Unless you're on a business trip, you're in no ways, shapes or forms representing your employers after you leave work. Just don't involve them and don't use their publicity for your gains. OR, if you're in the military.

Now I see where you get this "Defend my masters" attitude of yours from.

Off duty, out of uniform, leave him alone.

IMHO.

For the select few who say cops are always on duty, start lobbying for budgets to pay 168 hours/week.

yes i am right. off duty cops always represent their town/city/dept. you do anything to bring discredit upon the town/city/dept you will pay the piper. sorry but that is fact and sorry it doesn't fit within your beliefs which are wrong.

also, yes my actions out side of my company do have consequences. when i was hired 10 years ago one of the forms i had to sign as a condition of employment was a moral agreement. meaning that if i did anything to bring bad press to the company about something i did, i would be terminated. all companies are like that and depending on your job and company it could be more stringent or less stringent than others.

Incorrect. Cops and other public servants are held to a higher standard in return for the greater authority they hold over the public.

I'm no fan of cops, but I'm having a hard time getting excited over this. Th chief needs to bring him in the office, and bitch at him about watching his mouth in public, but that's about it. He also might want to lay off the alcohol if he can't control himself while drinking.
