Without even bothering to watch the video: almost everyone reading this thread has said something equally tasteless and offensive at some point, and many of us have posted something worse to ATOT.

i was thinking the same thing when i read the title. how many times have people in here made fun of people who were murdered, maimed, killed, etc?? happens all the time. wouldn't surprise me that those people would bash the cop for this, considering the cop hate on this forum.

I don't think that he should be fired for joking. However, the article says that he took a picture of the victim because it was funny and that he laughed when the victim's mother came. That is not professional behavior and worthy of dismissal.

let it go.

anyone that bitches about this kind of thing should pause and consider how they would deal with spending their working hours investigating murders.

I'd say it warrants a look at his record as an officer. If there is any indication this way of thinking affects his job performance, he should be fired.

You're in for a serious reality check if you ever discover the morbid humor that is common among police officers, firefighters and emergency medical service employees.

We are human too, and deal with more messed up sh!t than most people do. It's a way of coping with it.

This. With the outrage that the public has for this situation, I can't imagine what they would say if they knew how frequently emergency workers joked about absurdly morbid/terrible things.

Wrong then whatever company you work for should be the same way. Tasteless, ignorant and small minded yes. Fired no

Every company I have worked for has had the same policy, everything you do outside of the company is a reflection on the company, and as such if you do something wrong outside of work they will fire you for it if it generates public concern.

In certain careers your work life is your private life. I can't be a priest by day and go out and pick up strippers even though it's legal in my private life.

And yes teachers and police officers sign similar promises in their contracts.

I would be offended by this cop getting fired for this. It's unfortunate this video was posted on the internet - I see no reason for that - but I don't think there's anything wrong with him joking around about his work. The reality is that most people would have a very tough time dealing with seeing what he describes, and his humor is part of how he was able to do that.

I don't have a contract.

We do have a policy manual, but I really don't see anyone getting fired over something like this.

Does not excuse getting drunk and joking around about murder victims you saw on duty to members of the general public. That said I'm not saying he should be fired outright, he should have his record scrutinized more than other officers who have shown better judgment in how they let off steam.

way i see it. he was out with friends blowing off steam and some jerkoff recoreded him.

i have no trouble with him going into sensitivity trianing and a pshych exam again. but other then that he shouldnt get into any trouble.

Just like I said in the teacher thread....

Common sense. I don't care if it's your off-duty time or not. Use your head. Please understand that I completely agree that people should be able to do whatever the hell they want (legally) when not on the company dime but certain places of employment require even more careful tact... COMMON FREAKING SENSE.... than others if you want to keep your job. That's just how it is so deal with it.

This.

edit: I suppose to add some original content. I supervise a team of community mental health caseworkers. If, after hours, I saw a couple of my workers out at the bar and making fun of clients or what have you, we'd have a problem.

My supervisor would have a problem with me if she were to see me out on the town making fun of clients.

I think that expectation is appropriate. When you're with your buddies and it's private, a little humor or whatever to get you through the day is fine. Personally, I reserve all of my "coping" for when I'm at home or at a friend's. And I definitely leave out any way to identify the source of my story or whatever.

I'll occasionally poke fun at murder victims and I don't try to catch their killers, so I say he gets a pass.

Taking somebody's livelihood over a harmless lapse in judgment is BS. If he were talking about inappropriate conduct(profiling, taking evidence, falsifying evidence, perjury...), I'd nail him to the F'n wall. All he needs is a talking to about when/where he should discuss these things(know your audience). The punishment he got is excessive imo, but required to put on the proper face for pc nazies. I'd like to see him get on with his life, and career(assuming he's not an asshat, but that's another story ;^))

people mistake freedom with always having freedom no matter what path they choose.

There a certain professions one enters that dictates the are pretty much always on-duty.

No one forces these people to undertake these callings.

A cop or doctor/health provider has no place ridiculing a victim ever.
