Wrong! Unless you're on a business trip, you're in no ways, shapes or forms representing your employers after you leave work. Just don't involve them and don't use their publicity for your gains. OR, if you're in the military.

Now I see where you get this "Defend my masters" attitude of yours from.

wrong pal.

say you are in sales and you and your wife are swingers and post facial pictures of you and your wife along with other XXX pics on a swingers site. say somehow someway it really doesnt matter that your boss finds out about it. guess what you can be fired period end of story. you may not like that but its a fact of life.

Yeah? I dare you to write those exact reasons for firing on my termination letter.

lol and what exactly would you do about it?

You obviously just typing for the sake of typing and have no clues what you're talking about.

did he mention any names?

he was totally wasted, and being a total jerk, but... should we all be on duty when we are off duty is the question.

i wonder if he drove himself home....

Not really.

Only if your contract specifically includes some morals clause, or you're working in some at-will state where they can fire you if they feel like it, no reason needed.

Neither supports off-duty misbehavior being a reason for firing in general.

Perhaps you're arguing a different point, like "you will get fired in an at-will state, if your boss dislikes employees distributing their amateur porn on the internet." You'd be correct for that much more limited case.

Company can fire you for whatever they want as long as it isn't specified in law.

wrong, cops are always "on duty" and represent their town.

Wrong then whatever company you work for should be the same way. Tasteless, ignorant and small minded yes. Fired no

yes i am right. off duty cops always represent their town/city/dept. you do anything to bring discredit upon the town/city/dept you will pay the piper. sorry but that is fact and sorry it doesn't fit within your beliefs which are wrong.

also, yes my actions out side of my company do have consequences. when i was hired 10 years ago one of the forms i had to sign as a condition of employment was a moral agreement. meaning that if i did anything to bring bad press to the company about something i did, i would be terminated. all companies are like that and depending on your job and company it could be more stringent or less stringent than others.

Nope.

But hell, what would I know.

I think it's best to conduct yourself appropriately at all times, whether a cop, teacher, or unemployed. I don't think it should be mandated by law, or hounded in place by social terrorist groups(NAACP). He showed a lack of judgment by saying all that in a public forum, but I support his right to do so.

Well, it was insensitive but fuck...the guy is off duty making comments to friends.

"How can a police officer, who is hired to serve and protect the citizens of this community, out of his same mouth, speak words full of mockery and insultation?" Williams said.

Um, he's a human being...just like the rest of us?

Insultation? Really? 😕

I'd say it warrants a look at his record as an officer. If there is any indication this way of thinking affects his job performance, he should be fired.

Poor taste? Yes. Should he be off the force? No.

And why is the NAACP involved? Was there racial slurs in the Youtube video?

I'm happily surprised by the number of rational responses in this thread.

Sure, he's a drunk, insensitive bastard. That has no bearing on anything when he's not in uniform.

You're in for a serious reality check if you ever discover the morbid humor that is common among police officers, firefighters and emergency medical service employees.

We are human too, and deal with more messed up sh!t than most people do. It's a way of coping with it.

I love a good bitch slap in the afternoon.

People who deal with death on a regular basis often make light if it as a means of keeping their sanity.

This is why (unfortunately) we hear stories like this, or of the troops posing with those who they've killed, or joking about "smoking a camel."

Humorizing it makes it a bit less traumatic.

IMO, one of the worst things is to get pulled over by a Highway Patrolman who has just come from an accident where they had to scrape up the victims with a stick and a spoon. They're not usually very forgiving...and usually FULL of pissed off lecture.

Blowing off a bit of steam once in a while is good, especially for people with jobs like this.

Damn, people in this line and others similar need to be able to blow off some steam. He was right, it was funny in an ironic sense, yet he never called out the victim in a racist or negative light. Screw the naacp on this one.

I was trying to look into who the murder victim was and the events surrounding his death but every news story I found was just about the Officer, the Video, and the NAACP.

I did find this though:

Sinnott said Cousins' discipline was the maximum the administration is allowed to impose under the Civil Service provisions of the Third Class City Code.

Cousins will be:
-Suspended without pay for 10 days.
-Required to successfully complete the Employee Assistance Program, which includes sensitivity and alcohol counseling.
-Required to successfully complete a fitness for duty evaluation, which includes psychological testing.

"Failure to successfully comply with any of these items will result in the pursuit of immediate termination," Sinnott said.

Seems like a good course of action to me.

As far as i've heard, he wasn't involved with the investigation at all. Guess he was there at the initial crime scene though.

He got an appropriate punishment for now.

When what you do while drinking ends up on the news, its time to consider giving it up.

bringing embarrassment upon your employer inst a joke either pal, you can be fired for it period.

wrongful termination is for things like race, sex... poor performance or bringing unwanted negative attention is not covered by wrongful termination.
