According to Courthouse News Service, the mother of the dead teen alleged that Daniel Alvarado, the school district's police officer in question, had been reprimanded 16 times over the last four years; suspended without pay five times; and "recommended for termination for insubordination."

The mother said her son jumped over a fence and hid in a shed in the backyard of a house where the homeowner saw him, called 911, and alerted a neighbor, who pointed Alvarado in the teen's direction. But the mother also alleges that her son never left the shed, never approached the house or threatened the homeowner or her daughters.
"In violation of NISD police department procedures, Alvarado drew his weapon immediately after exiting the patrol car," the mother said, as reported by Courthouse News Service. "With his gun drawn, he rushed through the gate and into the backyard. Within seconds from arriving at the residence, Alvarado shot and killed the unarmed boy hiding in the shed."

reprimanded 16 times and still had a job?? wtf. this kid did not deserve to die like an animal.

btw, this is not a cop/hate thread, so please stay off the 'SandEagle hates cops' agenda. 🙄 This guy does not deserve the honor of wearing a badge.

I think the solution to fail cops is to take their guns but leave them on the street. See how they do with just a baton and a tazer.

Cop doesn't sound too good, but can we also have the background on the kid? I'm going to go out on a limb, but I don't think he is an honor roll student.

NISD officials confirm that Derek Lopez was a student at the Bexar County Juvenile Justice Academy, where students go when they have been expelled from alternative school. Witnesses said NISD officer Daniel Alvarado tried to stop a fight between Lopez and another student. Officer Alvarado said he shot Lopez because he felt his life was in danger.

At school, Lopez was troubled. Expelled from elementary school, he spent years rotating through alternative schools and the county's juvenile justice academy. He'd been disciplined for possessing drugs, assault and theft, school officials said.

sounds like a saint.

Why the fuck does everything have to be a civil rights issue?
At worst this is a basic criminal manslaughter charge. People are abusing civil rights laws way too much in this country. They were made to level the playing field, not fill your wallet.

I;m going to guess the kid wasn't just sitting their listening to his Zune like any other delinquent...

I am going with: Sandeagle cop hate thread

I don't understand cops in the states. Why do they sometimes randomly go straight to deadly force? I doubt a single 14yo posed enough of a threat to warrant any kind of major force let alone death. If a cop is not able to restrain him then he should not be a cop because he does not meat the physical ability of being able to restrain a kid.

I'm assuming the kid did something wrong to end up in this situation but regardless, execution on the spot is not the answer. Even big time serial killers like OJ Simpson get off better than that. Kinda sad when you think about it.

And why the hell get the cops involved over an elementary school fight?! Seriously? That's pretty sad.

A neighbor called for medical help and the teen died in the ambulance about an hour after he was shot.

An hour? How many people think a cop would still be in an ambulance an hour after being shot?

Ha that cop sounds like me. This is why I can never be a cop. I would pull my gun way too soon then I would think a chicken nugget is a gun and I would blow some dude's dick off. Sounds kinda sexy.

I'm sorry, but you're an idiot.

I am 6 feet tall and I have a 13 year old cousin who is just as tall as I am. Don't spout that bullshit about him being a kid, a 14 year old can hold a gun or knife or other deadly object just like anyone else.

My question is why he felt the need to use deadly force, which the story doesn't say.
