TKD is a gay, gay martial art. Did I mention it's gay? Do a real one like MMA or else just go to the gym and sweat it out with cardio or get a trainer for your bicycle or something.

Watch them in competition at the elite level. Other than that lucky tornado kick movie above they look like prancing idiots. Spend even a month at a good MMA school and you'd humiliate somebody who had spent a long period of time in TKD. It's not a real form of combat as proved time and time again when pitted against real ones. It is ok for fitness but not as good as working out.

MMA is not a style. It's a term for those who are well rounded with multiple styles; TKD can be one of those styles.

That and saying TKD is gay pretty much nullifies your opinion, Skoorb. 😛

And a boxer would fuck them up, but lose to a TKD master.

What's your point?

Unnecessary bias is unnecessary, Mr. Brooks!

My point, I like the other thread more! I think the best fighter wouldn't even be able to really tell you any of his particular styles because he'd pick and choose multiple ones as they seem suited, since every style has something to offer. If you HAD to pick one for brawling probably boxing or kick boxing would be best but an MMA school is going to get you plenty fit, too, if you want that, and train you more effectively than any single place.

I'm not a fan of Tai Kwon Do, but the prices are certainly reasonable. I'd go for it. If you find you like it, check out some Chinese styles. I prefer them to Korean.

TKD is gay. Everybody who can actually fight knows this. I'm sorry you've spent so long on it.

Please. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDbOHvzcADI

These guys would F that sh*t up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzZXHXXXEUE

LOL, TKD at Canada must be a joke. I used to train in Korea (when I was 7-8) and it wasn't like that at all. They push you hard (even though I was that young) and the training is brutal.

After I trained there and trained in the U.S., it was a joke, as my "master" could only kick to his waist! LOL, I would have round housed his ass at age of 11. :awe:

TKD is worthless as a martial art. If you want to get a workout go for it. If you want to learn how to get your ass kicked, go for it. As a fighting style TKD looses in every way imaginable. Everyone knows this.

You can argue all day about fighting styles but it really comes down to genetics. Anyone on AT could train for years in any style and Mike Tyson without a day of boxing training could roll out of bed and take your head off with a single punch.

Honestly, take it from a black belt in TKD. 10 years ago it was ok exercise. Now it is a mill of self confidence that will cater to the lowest common denominator.

This means you will not be pushed, you will simply be told you are doing great and end up doing your black belt form 12 months from now no matter how much you suck and getting a belt. I've watched my nephews black belt test and saw 300 pound adults kicking about knee high getting black belts.

It was silly and worthless when I was 16 and got a black belt, but at least then they made us actually attempt to do the techniques. You would get about the same amount of exercise walking a few laps at your local mall.

If you really want to get in shape seek out a crossfit gym. They will have trained professionals with a fun changing class that scales up as you scale. It will push you to your limit when you suck and it will push you to your limit years from now when you are crazy physically fit.

If you're in/near Manhattan, you can check out the YMCA (McBurney). (Your health insurance might offer a discount.) They offer various martial arts courses. I really enjoyed their Judo courses. Sensei Matsumura is amazing and the assistant instructors are great too.

The women typically don't join and stay in Judo, though a couple of the high ranked students/instructors are women. Most women seem to join the karate course. I think it's due to the grappling aspects of Judo.

Using their gym and Judo will seriously make you lose weight if you stick with for a couple of months.

The other option I recommend is Jujitsu. Maybe you can find a dojo that focuses more on defense and techniques standing up. That should be more friendly for women.

I experience with TKD wasn't that great. I didn't find it to be too engaging.

The YMCA is pretty cheap outside of Manhattan if you're interested in that, though I don't know what they offer. Definitely go to the gym for a couple of months before taking any martial arts course else you'll be really tired. (Maybe unless it's TKD.)

No, becoming the greatest fighter in the world is partly about genetics.

Being fit enough to engage in martial arts is achievable by anyone with a reasonably working body (i.e.you have most, if not all, your appendages intact 😛).

Hah- thanks guys for the spirited debate.

They do have multiples styles at the dojo, so I'm going to go in on Wednesday to discuss things with their master.

We'll still consider joining a gym but the nearest decent gym is a car ride away, and parking is hell there (plus it's expensive), so being a few blocks is very convenient. And I'm lazy about the gym because I find it absolutely boring, I don't think classes will be boring.
