Convince me to take taekwondo!

Took a walk around my relatively new neighborhood and stumbled upon a taekwondo studio. I'm a fatty who needs to lose at least 50 pounds and my wife needs to get fit as well, so we're seriously considering signing up. We're doing well on our mutual dietary changes, having lost about 20 pounds each since we started, but we definitely need to work out.

Gyms in the NYC area are pretty expensive, and taekwondo lessons are $20 a person for 3 lesson packs, with no contract.

For weight loss and the awesomeness of learning a new skill - should we just do it, even though we're chubby bubbies (i.e. it'll be an embarrassing first few months), or just hit the gym?
 
Gym. Do you really want some fit Asian dude wrestlin' with your old lady?

Haha - I'm completely secure with my wife.... The gym isn't a bad option, but discipline is something I lack. I'll readily admit to being a slacker, and the bonus of learning something new is great as well.

Though I'm not arguing with you, I get what you're saying 🙂 I'm just talking things out before I sign up, since money is tight and all.

Some TKD schools teach multiple disciplines, as well. As an example, I went to a TKD school and learned a little kung fu, a little capoera, and a lot of hapkido as well.

TKD is a GREAT place to start if you're interested in checking out other martial arts. It's a fantastic platform to build on.
 
If you're not willing to exercise on your own, tkd wont do squat for you other than a cute halloween costume. American schools are watered down and the instructor will never insult you mentally or physically to push you.
 
Go for it, but don't expect to win any street fights. Oh, and if you ever have to use it don't think for a second your fighting stance is going to intimidate anyone over the age of 12.
 
stop eating like a pig. Any other cardio would probably be just as good, if not better, for losing weight. Don't expect to magically lose 50 lb in couple months either. Oh, and there's a health + fitness section too...

There's usually more to do at a gym. Swimming, spinning classes, yoga, boxing classes, whatever. Plus if you have to sign a contract you'll have an incentive to go to the gym.

I lost 20 in less than one... but I'm 22 and it was from 200 to 180. My metabolism is also weird (efficient?) as hell. 😛
