By the way, guys: you're all losing this battle. Not me.

The only thing you've done to me is convince me that I need to start looking at a used RS 7 when it comes time to replace my current ride.[/QUOTE]

Rx 7 would be a better bet, no?

Nah. Good luck finding an old RX 7 that hasn't been beaten to death or modified in some undesirable way. Plus those rotaries drink oil like a sonofagun.

450hp v8, AWD, and an Audi? For under $40k? That's on my radar. Why even look at a Golf R or GTI?

It will take years to find one, thus, years of keeping whatever car one has, and no car payments :)

Buying the Audi?

No, but my Earth Day celebration involved purchasing a Earth-hating VW-cheating car, powered by petrol (at least it isn't diesel!)

(gotta get that stupid dealer decal off. heat gun + floss or fishing line?)

I'd still rather driver a rwd savana van than a sporty fwd though.

I love these guy's videos. I watched their DSG vs Manual Golf R video the other week--I guess this was a new one. I like the other Canuck/Brit team, Throttle House, I think?

The Urano Grey Rabbit was my 2nd choice if I couldn't get the SE + SE experience package + Iron Blue color. ...but if I were in Canada, it would be my first choice, because there is no SE and the Rabbits that they get are basically the best bits of each of those trims, all with the bitching Rabbit exterior & Plaid cloth seats. Canada Rabbit gets the Adaptive Chassis Control that adds comfort mode to the other modes, but here in the states you have to start with the SE trim to get that option. I think the Canada Rabbit also gets the large infotainment screen? The only thing you really sacrifice is the Sunroof, which I would gladly give up to get the other goodies in a Rabbit Trim. It also has adaptive cruise control and lane assist? ...I mean, it seems like the only advantage to getting the Autobahn in Canada is sunroof, Fender (Pioneer) audio system, and leather seats, which really isn't worth it if all of that is true. At that cost, it's only ~2-3k cheaper than an R, which would be a stupid choice, imo. Granted, you probably can't get comparably good OtD sale prices on the R as you could a GTI.

I only found them recently, and they do make an entertaining duo. In the rabbit review, they mention a lot of the R goodies made it to the 2019 GTI, did that apply to your golf too?

Oh yeah, so for 2019 (which is year two of the Mk"7.5" GTIs), all trim levels (including S) get the previous performance package: so Front LSD, R performance brakes, (and I think rear sway bar? not sure about that one actually--basically what was in the Mk7 and 2018 Mk7.5 "performance package")--now standard across the entire line. That is all versions in all countries.

The Euro and Aussie versions, I think, get the fully-digital dashboard doohicky (Rabbit and up, at least), a true mechanical LSD (US version is electric-controlled mechanical LSD--those Canadians are claiming the Canadian GTI also gets the mechanical LSD, which could be true). There is also a much, much nicer Titan black cloth option in the Euro GTIs, with more grip and texture, available up to Autobahn trim.

Canada might be getting fully German-made models? They also have "unlimited" inventory for the Rabbit trim, I guess because there is no SE. US only gets 3k Rabbits, I think). All the GTIs in the US are assembled in Mexico. All of the Golf Rs available anywhere in the world, however, are assembled in Wolfsburg (so you get the same trim and features here as you do over there)

I don't mind not having digital gauges--I still prefer analog and with how computer-driven and digital these cars are now, I'd like at least some things to be traditionally dependable. The only thing I wish were really available over here would be those fancier cloth seats that the German-made GTIs get.

So, this is the Euro/German GTI with the digital gauges and fancy cloth seats.

Aww no Audi for you! Oh well, hope you enjoy the GTI anyway. You just made some dealer very happy.

That's no decal, that's part of the paint job dude. Special edition.

:D

(In all seriousness: there is actually one under the GTI logo, if you noticed it. at least it's a puffy sticker, so shouldn't be too hard to remove)

I disagree, this thread was full of win.

The best part is that I just spent the last two days shitting my brains out and with a camera up my ass--so I haven't really even sat in the car for two days. :(

Tomorrow I drop the Mazda off at the dealership to do a recall repair (some power steering failure that I've ignored for....4 years?), then detailing it on saturday. ....I'm going to get a one day rental tomorrow from the dealership, lol. I've never had 3 cars before--even if for only one day.

....any suggestions on the rental that I should demand?? (I'm guessing all they have are Mazda3s)

I don't want to make it weird or anything, but is it too soon to talk about some tasteful mods? Yaknow, like an APR tune with an intake and active exhaust?

I don't want to void the warranty right now so if anything, I was just thinking a minor air filter replacement. I also don't really want a loud, farty car, in the city anyway. Too many of those chuds driving around the neighborhood already. Though, I must admit....

But obviously I'm going to get a "carbon" spoiler to replace the stock one, because it saves something like 2kg in weight, so of course it makes this thing super fast!

(not serious)

Ask for the most soulless Chevy sedan you can get. Odds are you won't ever have the chance to touch one ever again.

edit: or, like, a Ford Taurus.

this happened to us ~10 years ago when Berkeley Driver (we were living in Berkeley) plowed into the back of my GF's car, while we were at a stop light...stopped...in ~1 mile of obvious stopped traffic.

Insurance allowed her a 1 week rental after her car was totalled, and they gave us a clunky Chevy shitbox. I'm pretty sure it was this thing:

lol--that video is magic!

Anyway, that's when I got the Mazda.

Aahhhh not the Aveo. I'm pretty sure that's a Korean pile-o-garbage rebadged as a Chevy. Yup! It's a Daewoo. Sweet.

I was more thinking something that came from Lordstown.
