...jesus effing christ. I guess that torque helps them slalom down (and up) Grindelwald in February?

You totally want the GTI. Just do it.

It looks like Vic and my Mom are the only people that want me to be happy, lol.

I applied for some financing through VW today...just to see a quote (supposedly no early payoff penalty, and it's 60 month 1.9%...so eh...it's something that I budgeted 60% of the price for the first 6 months (at a higher APR). pffffffft)

I for one would be disappointed if the only cool thread in this subforum ended in you not buying the car you clearly want :p

don't worry man, something will be purchased. (honestly, Caveman dude had a pretty solid rec up there with the Suzuki thing that could carry like...some logs)

my rectum is going to be scoped within a week, and depending on the results of that, it will be a normal purchase (GTI) or bonkers purchase (this space saved for later). not a joke.

I promise.

But I didn't like the leather seats that I sat in. I keep telling myself, now, just over 24 hours later, that I actually hate them...but it's difficult to find a lot SE with any kind of cloth seats, in the color that I want, at these prices. ...the leather seat-hate-lag. It's like when you went from from watching the Last Jedi to home a year ago or whenever that was. You're like...OK this thing I've been anticipating since I was 6 or 7...generations ago, and I just went with it and whatever...but you're eventually left alone with your brain thinking about what happened, and all you can come up with is how fucking wrong everything is. Just...these leather seats were like sitting on hard taq just like watching Luke kill himself as a hologram for no reason or Leia Poppins or meaningless stormtrooper-throwaway red-shirt rebel character love interest is suddenly a thing for some reason...just sits there in your brain until it suddenly makes you angry. Because you know it should.

So, the obviously fake, stiff leather in these ~$30k cars....it's just crap, right? You guys are more experienced in these things that I am. The only leather-upholstered car that I owned was years ago, and that was well after it had been broken in by some yank physician and his crabs for ~6 years.

Would a 2013-2015 Audi RS 7 haul enough gear for you? Those things are AWD, ~450 hp, and routinely list for ~$40k if you can find one in your area. That would be a much better buy than a GTI or a Golf R.

LOL

Yeah it’s basically pleather if it’s anything like the stuff BMW uses on the regular 3 series ca. early 2000s. The M3 of that era got Nappa leather and it’s much softer but wears worse without regular care. The pleather is maintenance free, but stiff as you noticed. I’d prefer cloth too, but only new or lightly used because it would do a great job of holding and incubating years worth of crabs and general filth from the average car owner who vacuums once a decade

You didn’t ask for happiness, you asked us to talk you out of it.

Do you have escooters in your fair city yet? So much more economical than owning a car. You could put the savings towards a young man looking for a video card.

lol. I like how my ~$25-27k budget keeps receiving suggestions for $40k+ cars. :D but yes, a wagon would definitely do more than enough hauling for me...and I could even happily attach a trailer to that thing, I guess. I used to really like wagons, but the appeal has passed for me somewhat. I really do like small cars--and various reports and tests are claiming that the 6-sp manual GTI can get 40mpg on the highway, despite the published 33-34 mpg claims. I mean...that's really really really good for a motor that is only powered by dead dinosaurs.

The maybe-not-explicit purpose of this thread is to convince me not to buy a car (which will be a GTI)--not to buy some other car that is not a GTI. ...but I do appreciate all the suggestions, and I do consider them.

There are those public bike rental things, but the closest depot to my house is about 1/3rd the walk from my house to campus, which I walk to on nice days, anyway (otherwise, there are free buses that I take). It doesn't make much sense for me to use them (anyway, I do possess a bike, which I don't use). Also, bikes and scooters are for children. :D

If I lived in some of the cities or places I lived in previously, I could easily and happily get by without a car, but my area isn't exactly walkable, so it really is required around here for certain tasks. Also, I do some interstate travel every month or so. But I can easily go between weeks without driving, which I do, and it's how I tend to stay at the ~4k miles/year level.

lol wuh...

....

hmm, ~607bhp

that's an irresponsible amount of power for a wagon
E63's have around 600hp as well IIRC ....

In any case, I wish I could recommend a Legacy GT wagon, but, they stopped selling them in the US around MY2006 plus or minus.

..I think Paul Newman gave David Letterman a ridiculous wagon, a Volvo I think, that he and some buddies modified? It's in the most recent season of Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians and Cars show (well uh, when he interviews David Letterman)

I guess it does make sense, because those "estate" cars were mostly designed for English country folk that need the utility of hauling around farm stuff to and from their properties, with the muddy roads, but also something presentable to get to the village pub and drive back late at night, properly sloshed.

$40k now, maybe $35k or less after another year. Just keep your eye on them. Plus if that's your budget today, you can build it up over time, assuming you aren't . . . you know, terminal or something.

If you ARE terminal, just hit up SHODAN and she'll give you a whole new lease on life. Being a cyber-zombie isn't so bad. Not sure if you'll look good in an Audi though. Or a VW.

Awesome clip, I watched like a season of that and then cherry picked episodes, Looks like I need to watch the whole one since Letterman is fun to watch.

yeah Letterman is always a great interview. I'm a huge fan of Norm MacDonald, but his recent Netflix interview show is kinda meh....except the Letterman episode.

We're supposed to be talking him out of it. If you buy that car women will laugh at you and middle school boys will use your name to insult each other.

Norm's the best when he's standing up behind a mic delivering the goods. As a host, he's not the best, however, as a guest on other talk shows, he's almost always going to be hilarious.

yeah, he's great on Conan and Letterman, and even particularly special on those old clips of him trolling The View. He's been doing this Norm Macdonald show model for some years now...on what channel, I don't really know, but it's the same format that Netflix picked up. Some of those are really good. The best part is when he has his guests, the witty ones anyway, riff on the jokes that he wrote, testing them out. The guy is just an unending source of material. It's crazy how long he's been doing it and he still has it.

I saw him about a month ago here at Lincoln Theater and he killed it.

Trim level and colour? It would be interesting if the issue were limited to colors/trim lol.

The ST has had a few of those type of issues but none has affected me. Primarily they had a batch of bad transmissions early, they had a recall for a wiring problem, and an issue with the fuel evap or something. There were a couple of eye roller recalls as well, one of the halo lights was white but required to be amber by federal law, and the hatch would release at up to 8mph instead of the federally mandated 5mph or something like that. Several people have reported a false "headlamp fault" issue, which I myself have seen about 4 times in 6 years, but it seems to be a benign thing that clears up when the engine is restarted. My point here is that I wouldn't let a very sporadic thing like that persuade you from making the purchase, though 30 members from one 30K subreddit (of which maybe 1/3 have 2019s??) seems like a fairly high rate.

From reading those threads, it seems that color actually makes sense--not because of the color but because they were built in batch, by color. The first reports all seemed to be the Urano Grey Rabbits, and those happened to be the first 1k of that trim that were built, followed by cornflower blue, et al. So, if faulty part or other issue with the first cars on the line, it would be those Grey Rabbits.

However, it seems to have been reported across all colors and trim levels, and different ranges of manufacture dates. Seems a primary culprit is that the vehicles are stuck in Transport mode, and/or a faulty camshaft alignment. Seems the DSG has also been affected. A lot of users have blamed themselves, because many are going back to MT after a long absence, which is understandable. I would have/will do the same thing.

So, it seems like a fairly easy fix and from those user reports, the dealerships have been accommodating to the problem. My only concern would be that one guy that stalled at highway speeds. ....around here, that means I've suddenly been pancaked. (fortunately, a lot of the highway traffic is actually stop and go, though, haha).

It hasn't discouraged me, only thing being I'd hate to pick up a car then spend the first 1 or 2 weeks diagnosing a problem in the dealership. It is something I will bring up though--"please check transport mode!"

....but at least I'd still have my current car. State Farm tells me that I would have up to a month to keep it on the same policy before selling it, without any increase in cost (basically new cost would be to insure the GTI, but since the Mazda is on the same policy, I get to carry over the year/accident benefit on that policy without having to reset it by starting a new policy for the new car)

Sales jerks are rebuffing my price today. lol, I was about 20 minutes and slight drama from purchasing a car and, of course, vomiting after (over the phone), but it didn't happen...was so very close, $$-wise.

Then I tried again only 1 hour later. Cripes

....will regroup and go to work on this again tomorrow.

By the way, guys: you're all losing this battle. Not me.
