Also, Jen Psaki recently confirmed a breakthrough infection in the White House:

"Press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed that there have been multiple breakthrough coronavirus cases among White House staffers. Psaki did not say how many breakthrough cases there have been in the White House, but added that she would check."

She says the administration's commitment to "release information provocatively" only applies to "commissioned officers."

“We know that there will be breakthrough cases, but as this instance shows, cases in vaccinated individuals are typically mild,” a WH official says. “The White House is prepared for breakthrough cases with regular testing.”

Yep. Went maskless in public for about a week. No more. Too many irresponsible people out there making breakthrough infections possible. Sucks when you realize there are so many useless adults out in the world.

This is interesting. Do you know if any of them had prior infections as well? This seems (and I hope it is) like a highly abnormal scenario.

If delta can proliferate in vaccinated populations, won't that help it mutate faster though (especially if they assume social distancing is no longer required)?

The most likely answer is that vaccinated people shed significantly less virus if they do become infected so proliferation through vaccinated populations would probably be considerably more difficult.

We're lacking data about how easily delta can spread between fully vaccinated people AFAIK, but the suspicion is not very well. Appears to do fantastic in the unvaccinated though and their viral loads are way higher than with previous variants. Delta probably emerged in India where the vaccinated population was really low so the real enemy is unchecked replication to some extent with so many opportunities to mutate. Might another wave against a partially vaccinated population cause more variants with greater immune evasion? Yes, from what I've read selection is a distinct possibility. Don't see how we can prevent that really since 30% of Americans simply are content to get COVID over and over again until they draw the short straw.

Update the vaccines when required and I'll go get my booster along with my entire family. Anybody who chooses not to do so can take their chances.

The Delta variant has a stronger potential for exponential spread than the original, so it can do the funky broadway on poorly vaccinated populations when it gets to their neck of the woods, which it obviously will. It's just a matter of time.

Maybe I'll find your concern post when Trump was throwing parties and rallies with unvaccinated people in the height of the pandemic against his own CDC recommendations. Yet, here you are waxing poetic about people who were following all CDC recommendations.
 
I thought the CDC loosening the mask mandate was too soon. The policy didn't make sense. I've been wearing masks when I started reading articles about these break through cases weeks ago amidst the rise of the Delta variant.

Look at South Missouri and Northern Arkansas. If you remove vaccinated people from the equations, the outbreak is as bad as it was in December for them.

Our neck of the woods in Washington hasn't seen a huge surge in hospitalized patients yet, but I have started wearing a mask again. Like others have said, there are just too many out there.

Saw employees no longer wearing masks at a grocery store the other day. Snowbird season is about to start down here. And mask mandate bans were in the budget bills in the state legislature. Arizona is likely going to be fucked right in time for X-mas.
