I will probably buy this if I can get it for under $500. Don't need it, but why not. Can sell the 8700k so won't be hugely out of pocket.

I have a feeling prices are going to get quite a bit out of hand until Intel resolves it's capacity issues. It's the first time in years I see a shortage of current gen CPUs in my country, coupled with price hikes.

Well I care as this packaging looks like a huge waste of plastic. old Intel stuff was packaged very nicely and Eco-friendly. I remember my G2 ssd which came in brown cardboard box. Yeah this and AMDs packaging are anything but that.

I get that thinking, but I also like nice packaging as I hold onto it myself. It might be getting out of hand though (if it hasn't already, I seem to recall the first gen Threadripper packaging being difficult for people to open, which often means they'll just tear it to pieces, nullifying aesthetics).

As a side-note, when it comes to packaging both Intel and AMD should learn more from phone makers and less from toy makers.

No worries, just get a friend who works at Intel. Employees get new CPUs at half price, and they can order up to 5 units, pending inventory and availability. (i got my 7700K that way at launch)

as of today, there are 106,000 Intel employees scattered around the world, shouldn't be a problem finding one. even on these forums! 🙂

Hmmm, I'm considering selling my 8700K now due to the shortages, I'll be travelling soon until early 2019 anyway so will be away from my desktop for 2 months. Hopefully by then 9900K stock and prices will have settled at a reasonble level... If I only end up $100 or even $150 out of pocket I'll jump at a 9900K. I really don't need it at all, I just want it... 8C/16T @ 5.0GHz 🙂

I remember when that was still a big thing. Get the tray CPU, save like $25-$50 depending on the SKU. Nowadays it's hard to find vendors willing to sell those at a reasonable price.

Lol. Like I already knew. This is a $500+ no point in existing just buy a damn Ryzen type of CPU. I'm not interested in super expensive halo CPUs and GPUs anymore that offer slight improvement for a ton more money. This thing should be $399 and that would be perfect for what it is and where it's at. I might even get stupid and buy one for that price. I ain't made outta money, people! Come on! Give me a price Intel! Give me a price to work with here, man. Geeze.

There will be a distinct separation in performance between a 9900K and 2700X so the price premium is to be expected. Whether that difference is too great, the market will decide. I think even at $500 a 9900K will sell well, even if I personally think $450 would be a fairer price for this chip.

Which price do you believe, though? There have been many different prices leaked for the 9900K.

I will say that $582 is a non-starter price, though. I'd be shocked if that was Intel's suggested price.

I believe MSRP for the 9900K will be close to 450-470 USD. Availability should be the real problem in the first months.
