Contact your boss / HR

not doing anything is the most dangerous thing to do in a "shared" situation like this

Ugh...

You NEED to document this SOMEHOW. Even if it's taking screenshots or whatever for your own archive (which can be touchy in a case like this...)

Even if they were both definetely >18 it still is not appropriate on a work computer. Personally I would NOT contact the guy.. Let HR figure out whether they're over 18 or whatever the punishment is.

To the people suggesting a secure delete... why? Honestly, if you think that shit is necessary, you should know full well that this decision is something for management/HR to decide. Not only that, but the use of that software, if discovered by some member of IT or otherwise could implicate the deleter as trying to cover their tracks for some sort of inappropriate behavior with a company laptop.

Hand the hardware over for someone else to make a decision who is in a position to put the company's perspective as the most important objective. Take yourself out of the moral dilemma and let a manager decide what to do with it.

DO NOT hand it over to IT. Allow HR to handle the situation, and they will involve IT as necessary. Guyver's suggestion to involve multiple parties is also likely a good solution, as you cover your bases of reporting it to a friend who may try to cover the other guy. But deleting it, whether with a secure delete program or otherwise, makes it look like YOU are trying to cover something up. That'd be the dumbest thing you can do, IMO.

If the girls are fully clothed in the pictures I don't see the big deal, if the pictures bother you delete them. Who cares if there is a record that you deleted them.

A better description of the pictures might make me think different, but all you've described is two young girls (possibly underage) fully clothed and kissing. Are they in sexual positions or something? what else is inappropriate besides the fact they are young and kissing?

I think taking them to the boss or HR would cause undue tension and drama and not much else. If they are not porn, then it's most likely nothing will happen but embarassement for the guy (or you) and do you really want to continue to work with a guy you've caused public embarasement? And what if you take it up the ladder and it turns out they are his relatives? Opps!!!

If you really find them offensive take the laptop to the guy and say "take your girlie pictures off before you bring this into the office for me to look at, OK!"

Now if your understating them and they really are child porn, then by all means take it to HR and bust his ass.

I had a similar situation, except it involved a male and gay porn. Fortunately, I wasn't the one that discovered the issue. I, however, was the one responsible for archiving all of the data on his laptop, presumably for future legal proceedings. I found it quite difficult to work with that laptop, not knowing what kind of sticky hands were all over that keyboard.

Wow... bunch of fucking retards...

It isn't mosh's decision to make whether they are legal age or not. If you fucked some chick at a bar who is underage but that told you she is 18 you'd still get the good ol' FPmitA prison bitch treatment. And to the fucking rusty ass tool rotting away at the bottom of the toolbox, everyone has a CYA policy and cares about that shit because the people above you will be more than happy to throw your fucking ass under the bus if the heat starts coming down on them. You CYA because it is the only defense you have against the higher ups at your company. Document the shit out of everything because some day some fucking douchebag is going to look bad and try to pin it on you.

How did it go with the IT guy Mosh?

I'm usually anti-snitching, but would probably have to mention it to one of his superiors.

WWYD?

The Administrator of our office, a man, took one of our laptops with him for a few days to meetings he had in another city. Today I had the laptop and noticed a picture file on it that I hadn't seen before. I opened it and inside were a dozen pictures of two young females, definitely under age, probably about 14-15 years old, engaged in some kissing and fondling of each other. They were fully clothed.

I'm not sure what to do about it. Just leave them on there like I don't know they exist? I don't think I should delete them as I don't want any action taken on those pictures being associated with me. I really don't want to approach him on it, but it's bothering me that I've seen these pictures saved on a computer I am using.

What would you do? : /

Delete them and leave it alone. When he realizes they're gone he'll know someone found them and (hopefully) won't download them again. Then if he does, report it.

Honestly, the concept of deleting them in any fashion suggests that you are uncomfortable with it, and concealing something. If you this was a picture of an office building, would you be thinking about deleting it (or securely deleting it)? The fact that you even have to think about suggests you should take it to a superior. Easy.

Delete and ignore.

Pictures of two clothed teenage girls kissing are all over Facebook. Are you going to call the cops on Mark Zuckerberg?

Damn Mosh, it's obvious this is really eating at you.

I'll have to agree that the best idea is to just bring the pictures to someone higher up. Don't implicate anyone, just say that you found these pictures and you think they may be illegal, and are certainly against company policy.

Also, let us know what you end up doing and how it goes.

Just delete it and ignore it. It's too borderline to get the guy fired for sure, so if you report it you're just as likely to end up working uncomfortably with a bunch of guys who know you tattled.

It's not illegal, not really porn, and it's not your personal computer. I'd just delete it and move on personally. Even a normal delete and remove from the recycle bin would take some serious work to undo, and who's going to call attention to it to get that whole process started in the first place?

Some kid or his kid (if he has any) could have gotten a hold of it and put those photos on there. Some high school kid could have taken those photos and uploaded them to some social site. Kids do stupid stuff and this could be the result of that.

yes, turn a blind eye to next week's star of "To Catch a Predator", except his next victim won't be a setup from the show, it will be some underage girl he abducts, rapes and murders because people like you who found out about his proclivities did nothing back when something could have been done.

ok, that's worst case scenario. Best case possibly being he dl'd some pics of girls kissing and they look youngish but are of age and he violated company policy and common sense by using a shared computer.

Either way, this goes to HR, no question.
