comparing Jordan and Kobe

Just remember a few things.

-Jordan never had a Shaq on his team. The best center they had was Longly, and 2nd stringer in Pheonix.

-Consider for a moment that the triagle offense require a dominating post up player. Jordan was a mere shooting guard, he posted people up like a power foward and to 6 nba championships.

-Jordan spent his earlier days being coached by a younger less experienced Phil Jackson and staff. Kobe has the benefit of a coach coming in with the experience of 6 nba championships. Just remember how reckless this guy was under Harris, and people should realize just what an luxury it is to have probably the best coach in the NBA early in your career.

Comparing the chicago team to the Lakers team head on.

Center- Shaq and Longly: winner Shaq by a landslide

PowerFoward - Rodman vs Horace. Rodman is a better rebounder and a slightly better defender. Horace is a far better shooter than Rodman so the Power Foward position still goes to Horace. Let's not forget Horace's performance against Wallace, Webber, and Duncan, probably the top 3 power fowards in the league. I doubt Rodman would have done any better. Ok, some people are not convinced Horace is better than Rodman. If Rodman was better than Horace, then the Lakers would not have booted him off the team after 1/3 of the season. Is there are chance in hell that the Lakers will boot Horace off the team? I rest my case.

Small Foward - Scotty Pippen vs Rick Fox. Scotty Pippen is a far better defender, but Rick Fox is still an outstanding defender. Rick was the #1 guy when he was with the Celtics, he can really score and people don't realize that. Pippen is an ok scorer. Pippen by a thin margin.

Shooting Guard - Jordan vs Kobe: Jordan

Point Guard - Ron Harper vs Derek Fisher. Both are about equal on the defensive end. Fisher is a far better shooter. Harper can take it to the rim. One has more problem guarding the smaller guy, the other has a problem guarding the bigger guy. PUSH.

Putting these two teams side by side, it seems fairly close. Take out Jordan and Kobe and the Lakers are a far better team. Just goes to show how good Jordan was.

Also realize, Kobe is on a team full of veterans still in their Prime. Fox, Oneal, and Fisher are at their prime. Horace can still play and Horry is a great backup Power Foward with surprising 3 point range. In other word, Kobe entered into an already rosy situation.

Jordan entered a team that was rebuiding with a close to a league worst .300 record.
For all you Kobe worshippers out there who likes to point out that Kobe already has a title so early in his career, can you stil make that statement if Kobe was drafted by the Vancouver Grizzlies?

Finally, this has nothing to do with Jordan and Kobe, but for the educated Kobe supporter here, and I assume on the internet most people are, consider for a moment how hard you worked through college and life to get to where you are now.
Kobe is born physically gifted, and a few layup drills later after skipping college, he's a media darling make 1,000X more then you'll ever make. Just thought you might want to know this before you worship this kid too much.

Uh oh supercyrix, you made sense, but it was negative towards Kobe. Watch all the Kobe fanboys/trolls come in here now 😀

/me counts the seconds till JopsephStalinator chimes in...

There is a recent 400 post thread on this one, but hey, we need to start over and rehash this novel subject.

:disgust:

Most important is the fact that Jordan is the greatest player ever and Kobe is a young punk with some potential. He has a LONG way to go.

dont crap on kobe...why do you call him a punk?? he is actually more sensible and cultured than your average person. if you dont know someone why talk sh!t about them?? comment only on his playing.

<< dont crap on kobe...why do you call him a punk?? he is actually more sensible and cultured than your average person. if you dont know someone why talk sh!t about them?? comment only on his playing. >>

But, you know him well enough to know that he's more sensible and cultured than the avg. person? How? From watching him play? 😉

it was even said by shaq himself that kobe is a nerd and works HARD. he doesn't like to go out and he is a family man. many nba players on the other hand, are known to do things not so traditional.

also, if you can do better, go do it. do a little research on a person before talking sh!t. he's just doing his job.

btw, how do YOU know he's a punk?

Wait a couple years for KOBE to be traded to the Clippers or somewhere like them and then we will see what Kobe has.

Kobe at 22 would sh!t all over Jordan at 22 in a 1 on 1 game. The game has advanced so much more offensivly than the early 80's when advanced crossovers like Iverson and Bryant have didn't even exist in the NBA back then.

lol...if you say so =)

fyi...shaq is known as a partier and you can catch him cruising sunset here in LA once ina while. anyways, he was asked if he likes to party with kobe, he said something like....kobe's a nerd...he plays hard and goes home to his wife...this is not word for word but it sums it up.

iamdavid, jordan had a few allstars to back him up. i dont think there are any allstars on the clippers...(maybe 1 this year)

BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHHA.......you've got to be kidding me. If the game has advanced SO MUCH offensively, why is the overall shooting percentage worse? Why is overall free throw percentage worse? Hint: it ain't because of better defense.
I'll take Jordan over Kobe 1 on 1 at any point in their careers. Look at MJ at 22. He was playing against much better overall competition than Kobe is now. He was having to completely carry his team.
Even with these odds, and even though MJ was a rookie at 22, He was rookie of the year and STARTED on the All Star team.
If you look at both players' stats at age 22, you'll find that MJ, even though he was a rookie, has slightly better overall stats than Kobe.
You really can't go wrong with either player, both are great, but it remains to be seen if Kobe can carry a sorry team on his back to the playoffs and beyond.

I heard this cool old dude (can't remember his name) on sports radio this morning with a good angle on the whole comparison.

He emphasized that fact that they were very different player, all revolving around their size and type of play. ie: Jordan-shorter, stouter, stronger. Would attack the basket with strength and attack defenders with the same. Kobe-taller, thinner. Is more finese when going to the basket and twists and bends in ways the even Jordan never did. I'm not saying he's better, I just thought it was a neat way of comparing the two.

Jump shot goes to Jordan
Ability to impose will on opponent goes to Jordan
Taking it to the hoop, I'd say is a tie
Potential has to go to Kobe, who knows how good he'll be
Jordan made his teammates better
Kobe is learning (hopefully) to do this

Both great players. Jordan is the "lock" since we already know how he turned out. Kobe is still amazing.

Also-I disagree with the Grant/Rodman comparison. I'd give rebounding AND defense to Rodman. Does anyone remember seeing Rodman guard Shaq in 96? He did a decent job most of the time (with help of course) and of course he rebounded like a madman.

Better than Kobe? How so? Because AI takes about 97 shots a game and only makes 15 of them? In case you don't know, that's how he gets his big numbers, by taking a lot of shots. Kobe can't take 33 shots a game like Allen cause Shaq would have a fit. If it were up to me, I would rather have someone like Kobe who performs considerably better in the playoffs than in the regular season, than someone like Allen who performs considerably worse in the playoffs than in the regular season. Kobe never in his life has ever had a 5/27 day, while Allen seems to have at least 1 every week.

johnlee sums it up for me.

we know how good jordan is...we still don't know how good kobe can get.

i wish i could fastforward all this madness to find out whose better!!

BTW, the lower shooting percentages account for the numerous playing rules that have changed over the years. And Michael never carries his team at 22, carrying a team means winning games which didn't happen in his early career. The Bulls dynasty didn't start until Pippen took his role at the 2 spot behind Jordan.

I am sorry but if you consider a team with perhaps one of the greatest coaches of all time, going along with Cartwright, Paxon, Grant, Pippen and other key players that made the Bulls team what they were as "sorry", then you need your head checked.

all in all, iverson is a great player. he deserves the mvp. he carried his whole team...as far as taking too many shots, that's another story. he did take them this far.

I'm just bitter. I'm bitter because I worked my butt off during college. I'm bitter because I live in LA and they get some kid out of high school, pays him millions of dollar, and tell me that he represents LA. Right...like I'll spend another cent to buy another Lakers ticket to further fuel a 22 year old high school kids field trip to Italy.

<< The Bulls dynasty didn't start until Pippen took his role at the 2 spot behind Jordan. >>

Piipen isn't worth a sh!t. If it wasn't for Jordan, he wouldn't have the numbers he does. Pippen is the most overrated player in any sport I have ever heard.
