I bought my 2800 direct from Compaq way back in April and I'm really happy with the performance and battery life. The keyboard layout is pretty good--the keys are full sized and are well placed. My only real gripe with the layout is the pointless backslash key that they put next to the spacebar. I tend to hit the spacebar with my left thumb, so I occasionally graze the backspace when I'm typing quickly.
This probably won't happen to you, but my biggest complaint by far is a cosmetic one. When I recieved my 2800, the bottom of the chassis was totally scratched up at the corners. It's as if they just threw it around down the assembly line. They also put the Windows XP, the Intel Inside, and the hand injury stickers on completely crooked. Yes, crooked stickers are annoying to me.
