RossMAN, in your quest for a laptop, I think that the Compaq 2800 will make you most happy 🙂

Those babies look awesome. Powerful as the high end Dell's, but nice and thin 🙂

......I want one now......

Yeah whenever I visit CostCo B&M I swing by the laptop section and wipe the drool off my chin after I'm done caressing the elegant Compaq 2800 lappie.

Wait a sec, now that I'm married shouldn't that be my wife's job (wiping my chin that is)?

😀

LOL, I thought you were going to say your wife's job was to be drooled over

The 2800 is seriously slick....

If/when she says it's ok which'll probably be a while.

hmm... looks like no one read my post correctly... the 1005 series of TOshibas have NiMH *ONLY* and the 1805 (a step up!) uses Li-On! If this CostCo deal is the 1800 series... then by golly this would be pretty darn hot. But alas, I cannot live w/out the DVD/CDRW combo drive... there's no going back.

and the processor if it is indeed th 1.13 cellery is not your grandma's celeron, that's p3 on a 100fsb! too bad i got a lappie already... but then again, don't know how i got on without one for so long!

Can we speed up the process by telling her that her loyal subjects request an audience with her highness?

heh.

bleuikO!

Rossman,

Is $1099 the actual price (Buy It Now?) of the IBM or is it the starting bid?

I also would consider potential apps, because if any gaming or use of an external monitor is considered, the Compaq 2800T is worth looking at because it has a much better video processor than any of these 3 - it has the ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 with 32MB RAM. I specced out a 2800T 1.4GH P4, 128MB, 20GB, CD, 32MB ATI Video for $1199 ($1399 - $150 coupon - $50 if you call them up & haggle). IMHO it is worth the difference if you want to play games.

There may also be a hotter deal - this weeks Circuit City flyer showed a $100 Compaq rebate on the 2800T, plus a Circuit City $200 rebate (both mail in). If that worked, you could get the Compaq for $1099 (but you have to go to the store & "Build It" yourself)

Pity Toshiba dumped the $800 notebooks!

Bink - Sorry I don't have an answer for your eBay question since I'm relatively new at BIN's and I honestly don't know.

Thanks for the Compaq/CC tip though, if we can combine the $100 and $200 MIRs that would be a smokin' hot deal.

The ad is pretty clear and combines the 2 rebates - they show a 2800T specced out to 1999.99 -200 -100 = 1699.99 after rebates.

I have not tried building one at CC, but the only problem I found at Staples was that they force you to get 256MB of RAM ($75 upgrade). Since that gives you 2 sticks, you are forced (if you want to use more than 128MB) to pay another $50 for 1x256MB. Since this is worth $70 at Crucial - say $20 for the 128MB = $50, you are giving back $75 straight off the bat.

Has anyone ever been able to get a better deal from the Build Your Own Compaq from the store?? i.e. Did BB, CC, Staples, or any other participants offer any incentives other than the price on the screen less any published rebates??

Everything I've ever want : cheap, DVD, 20 Gig, etc but NO LEGACY 9 pin SERIAL port . It s*cks if I've have to buy a PC card for this purpose which is a pain in the tail with the dongle !!!! Oh man, why 3 USB and no 9 pin . Still drooling over this .

I was at CostCo B&M two weeks ago and saw the Toshiba Satellite 1105 on display and played around with it for a little while.

Unfortunately there are two major reasons why I won't be buying this laptop:
1) Maybe it's just me but the keyboard felt flimsy, not solid, it's hard to describe. If you press down on a key you can see the keyboard bow slightly, the $1599 Compaq 2800 next to it didn't do that nor did the $1999 Sony VAIO.
2) No Windows key, very irritating.

Otherwise everything else looked great and worked like a charm.

i agree with ur first reason rossman...but windoze key!?!??!? god i remember hating the thing when it first came out...chalk that up as a positive damnit!

I know I know call me weird but there's a friggin' function key in it's place. WTF is up with that?

Bump! I just bought a Compaq Presario 2800T from Compaq (through an affiliate, a deal I saw posted here and F*tw*llet) for $1700 (was less but upgrade to 3 year warranty). P4 1.6hz, 256mb, 30gb, DVD/CDRW, etc. All I can saw is that this is one sweet laptop. Reason I choose it over Dell Insprion 8200 was that it looked so much better and was much lighter. This is the laptop you guys should get. Power, mobility, and design. When I ordered it, Compaq was including a Coupon to get a free MultiPort Wireless Adapter 🙂. I don't know if they are still offering it, but worth it to check it out. I also upgraded to 512mb through the Dell generic Inspiron ram deal poster a couple of days ago. Dell ram in a Compaq laptop... how ironic. Anyway, the Presario feels nice, and runs just as nice. Setup was easy and the uninstallation of all the crappy apps (lot of yahoo stuff) was just as easy. Still might format and install WinXP Pro instead (just to be able to remotely control my workstation). If the prices are lower in August, I say jump all over it. The 2800t may not be as cheap as some other laptops, but it's perfomance makes up for the price difference.
