I bought my 2800 direct from Compaq way back in April and I'm really happy with the performance and battery life. The keyboard layout is pretty good--the keys are full sized and are well placed. My only real gripe with the layout is the pointless backslash key that they put next to the spacebar. I tend to hit the spacebar with my left thumb, so I occasionally graze the backspace when I'm typing quickly.

This probably won't happen to you, but my biggest complaint by far is a cosmetic one. When I recieved my 2800, the bottom of the chassis was totally scratched up at the corners. It's as if they just threw it around down the assembly line. They also put the Windows XP, the Intel Inside, and the hand injury stickers on completely crooked. Yes, crooked stickers are annoying to me. :)

I agree. Before making final judgement on this deal we need to wait until it starts which is this upcoming Monday 8/12 only 4 days away. Then we can determine if it's HOT, LUKE WARM or COLD. I'm hoping for a loaded Compaq laptop for $1599 or $1499 minus $100 coupon that would be nice.

Hmmm... No one can offer any comments on the XGA screen, eh?

I'm going to go to Costco today and check it out. I'll let you guys know.

You know what? I'm not sure if it's just my Costco B&M, but I saw a Compaq 2800T P4 1.8Ghz-M, 512MB, 40GIG, DVD/CDRW, 15" ULTRA XGA, USB2.0 ports and all, for $1850 or thereabouts.

I thought it was a pricing mistake. Ultra XGA screens (1600x1200), and smoking specs like that? What gives? I checked online, and those normally go for $2500+

That's most likely my top pick for now. Did anyone else see that at their costco? I thought the price for what you get was pretty awesome.

Does it really matter right now? No. Why? Because the $100 off coupon isn't active yet, it doesn't start until 8/12. A lot can happen between now and then, we won't know just how hot this is until 8/12, because models, prices and selection can drastically change by then.

Why the hell does every store have to have their laptops strapped to the table with metal bars!? How am I supposed to decide if I like the laptop when I can't pick it up, close it, or see the back of it!?

Regarding the XGA screen... I suppose I can live with it if the deal is REALLY HOT, but otherwise I think I need the SXGA+.

My Costco had this exact same thing for the exact same price, EXCEPT it was only an XGA screen.

EDIT: Oh yeah, does this coupon have any restricitions? Can I use it on a build to order computer? Or only pre-configured? Thanks

you could always buy and return it no hassles at costco.

perhaps i was mistaken... i will check again. but still, i thought it was a great price.

it's online only. so can't use it on the above mentioned specced out laptop.

btw, anyone know anything about compaq reliability? i read in pcmag about how compaq got an "e" on service and reliability... that's gotten me thinking.

I found the "coupon" in the Passport book, and it's not even a coupon. It just says that you can take $100 off any Compaq laptop (excpet refurbished ones) online between those dates. All the other deals in the book actually say "with coupon." This one doesn't. So I guess they'll just be automatically discounting the Compaqs $100.

I just configured one and it looks like the direct compaq has it cheaper. Not to mention that the direct compaq has an instant $100 off.

Check again guys. They updated it...

Here's a config I put through:

Presario 2800T-1.60Ghz
Mobile Intel ® Pentium ® 4 Processor 1.60Ghz-M
256MB 266MHz DDR SDRAM (2 DIMMs)
20.0 GB UDMA Hard Drive
8X DVD-ROM MultiBay
15.0" TFT SXGA+ Display
Microsoft Productivity Suite
Integrated 56K v.92 PCI Modem and 10/100 NIC
32MB Dedicated DDR Video Memory
1.44 MB Floppy Drive MultiBay
AC Adapter Included
8 cell LiIon Battery 57.6 WHr
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
1yr Parts / 1 yr labor/1yr mail-in
Ground Shipping
Promotional Carrying Case

Presario 2800T-1.60Ghz
Compaq Price $1,713.00
Costco Member Price $1,629.99
Shipping & Handling included

Then there's a picture that says $200 instant manufacturer's coupon (applied at checkout) and $100 MIR. So $1,629.99 - $300 = $1,329.99 for this particular config. That includes shipping, but unfortunately does not include tax, which for me is a hefty ~$120 (ouch!).

EDIT: The Compaq Direct price is lower than Costco's w/o shipping, but add $40 in for shipping, and then they're about the same. From that same price, you take $100 off from Compaq or $200 off from Costco. $100 rebate applies to either place, so basically it boils down (for me at least) to Costco's final cost after tax and shipping being $100 less than Compaq's.

I'm thinking no. You can pick up a Dell 4150 with more memory and a bigger hard drive for about the same price as one of these Compaq's after tax.

dell $1199 2650's are already $100 rebate, free case and shipping and and and....

I finally gave into the temptation, I had been waiting along with RossMAN and others for a good deal on a nice newer laptop and went for this one. I ended up getting a 2800T w/ 1.6ghz 20gb 256mb 14.1in dvd/cd-r combo and 32meg radeon. It will come to about $1500 which was my price range. I think I will be very happy with this deal. Thanks RossMAN.

That's a nice deal, congrats! I'm still kicking myself for not jumping in on the clearanced Dell i8100's esp considering the FREE 3 year warranty or the Dell i8200 with free leather carrying case, free shipping and rebate for around $1368.

Damn.

Here's the deal I got from Costco Online on a Presario 1500T, which includes the 1.4Ghz Mobile Celeron version of the P4 (400Mhz FSB, but only 256KB of cache), and the chipset on that system supports two built-in USB 2.0 ports and one firewire port:

Presario 1500T-1.40Ghz
Mobile Intel ® Celeron 1.40Ghz-M Processor
256MB 266MHz DDR SDRAM (2 DIMMs)
20.0 GB UDMA Hard Drive
8X DVD-ROM
15.0" TFT SXGA+ Display
Microsoft Productivity Suite
56K V.92 PCI Modem
ATI RADEON 7500 with 32MB DDR memory
1.44 MB Floppy Drive
AC Adapter Included
8 Cell LiIon Battery 66 WHr
Integrated 10/100 NIC
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
3 Yr Parts/3 Yr Labor/3 Yr Mail in
Ground Shipping
Promotional Carrying Case

All of that (note the 3 year warranty upgrade and the extended capacity battery), plus a free 802.11b wireless adapter that doesn't use the PC Card slot for $1220.73, including tax and shipping, after the coupon discount and rebate. That's alot of notebook for $1200! :D

MrHappy,

The 2800T is a little thinner (and lighter) than the 1500T and it offers the Mobile Pentium 4 processors instead of the Mobile Celeron and the desktop versions of the P4 (which use more power and generate more heat than the "M" models). I ordered the 1500T with the Mobile Celeron to conserve battery life. The 1500T also has a built-in firewire port, which I don't believe the 2800T includes, and a built-in floppy, whereas the 2800T has no floppy (it can be ordered as an option) and uses a media bay for the optical device (shared with the optional floppy). Both take the Compaq Wireless adapter that fits in the back of the screen, and both include a coupon to get that adapter for only the cost of shipping and tax. There may be more differences, but I have focused on the 1500T given my budget, and they both look like solid systems, especially compared to the HP Pavilions in that price range that use AMD processors and take video memory out of the system RAM.

Although the coupon deal was suppose to expire yesterday, the configuration at Costco online still shows the $200 coupon discount at checkout. If you're think about ordering, I'd call Costco to make sure they will still honor the coupon discount and not subtract it later due to the expiration date.

Good luck!
