Don't get kilobytes/sec confused with kilobits/sec. 1 byte = 8 bits, 1 kilobyte = 2^10 bits...you do the math.

Wow! That will be awesome! I just tested my connection at dslreports.com and I'm only getting just over 1 Mbps and 224 kbps uploads. Back when the service was owned by @home I was getting just over 2 Mbps and when ATTBI took over, it was 1.5 Mbps and now that Comcast owns it, I have a lousy 1 Mbps.

When using file sharing programs, in particular bittorrent, my calculated average for dl/ul is 250/30.

Comcast sucks for P2P, I had much better speeds when I had PacBell DSL. When the promotion is over, abd if my peer connection limits dont get better after the upgrade, I'm going back to Pacbell DSL...

I live just south of San Francisco in Burlingame...

my p2p transfers are always maxed... you do realize that if you are uploading at 30, your downstream is not even going to reach 300, let alone 400? 250/30 is nothing to be mad at, assuming your talking about kb/sec.

I live in Castro Valley, which one one of the original @Home test neighborhoods starting in 1996 and had a solid 3-4Mbps till attbi took over from @Home. I sure hope I'm included, and lumped together with one of those other areas, or else I'll be pretty mad!

It looks like Castro Valley speeds went up I just did a test on dslreports check it out. Im on the top of the list for 94546 with 3215/241

Glad to see that they're finally bringing you guys up to broadband speeds =P

Because I remember when I had 640Kbps BellAtlantic(now Verizon) DSL that sucked and it couldn't even hit 90KB/s but then I got Road Runner...and I pretty much knew that any critics who whined about Cable being shared were idiots, including that PC Magazine writer who predicted the demise of cable internet.
PPoE slow assed DSL couldn't even compare to a Road Runner line going 3Mbps/384(400?)kbps...

And the upload went up plenty too...used to only upload at 9KB/s which made me feel like it was BARELY better than a 56K. This only bugged me when I sent people big pictures or (fill in other completely legal multimedia files, such as large powerpoint presentations) or was uploading a complex website or something, but still annoying!!!

Of course I was soooo jealous the day I found out about Optimum Online's speed caps...10Mbps/1Mbps!!! Gargh!!!

My school currently caps our uploads to hell...we upload about as fast as my old DSL line...so pathetic. I think my school is run by morons who only care about the bottom line and ignore the whole concept of "Internet 2" since now transfers between us and other I2 institutions are capped at...9Kbps. Wow...you mean I2 is now SLOWER than I1?
Ugh<---disgusted

Not to say that I haven't found a way around the cap, but that's not the point. lol. Bandwidth needs to be freeeeeeeed! ;)

Thanks, aZhE. I'm now at the top of the 94552 chart! :) Before resetting cable modem: 1777kbps. After reset: 3577kbps. Sweet deal.

They must have a very very fat pipe coming out of every county, much less state... I know at least 10 people that have comcast 1.5mbps (probably 3mbps now, I haven't asked them) in my small town alone. I think we should organize a "network stress test" to see if their network really IS only at %18 capacity.

Ugh.

I just moved to Shrewsbury, MA 01545, where the town runs its own electric and cable companies (SELPSCC) and I have no choice in broadband providers. Allegedly they keep ownership of their own utilities to keep rates "competitive" or something, but considering I'm already paying $50 (including cable subscription discount!) for 1000/256 ($5-7 more for about 1.2mbit less than I had with Comcast in Marlborough, MA 01752), I beg to differ. I wonder how they plan to react to this latest move... I won't be surprised if they summarily dismiss my inquiry by stating that Comcast isn't considered a "competitor" (technically im Closer to Charter land than Comcast, but even Charter has 2mbit).

I am on a very small ISP based out of a boondocks town, and I used to get ~900 down and 128 up. comcast came into our area, and I guess they decided to step it up a bit. I had called and emailed them, as I am sure others did. My 1 year commitment price is 32 a month. I went to test after reading this thread and:

2003-12-13 08:55:47 EST: 1371 / 246
Your download speed : 1371113 bps, or 1371 kbps.
A 167.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 246153 bps, or 246 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

WOOOHOOO! Share the Love Baby!! I was considering switching to comcast, but not anymore. Competition is good:)

Your download speed : 2708779 bps, or 2708 kbps.
A 330.6 KB/sec transfer rate.

You won't get much much more difference after......because you are definitely hoovering around 3 Mbit/s if you are getting 300kbs+....

I was overstating a bit. From a good solid source, like D/Ling from a microsoft server, I get steady 200-245. Occasionally
I get 250+. Not often. From most sources, I get 80-150.

BTW, I tried again today. Unplugged the modem power, took my 2 year old son upstairs for a bath, then came back
down, plugged it in and tried again. Got 1459 down, 226 up. No change here :(

No surprise though. Comcast is always behind schedule around here. The kept telling me that we'd have cable
internet access in my neighborhood within a month or two for about 9 months.

I wish there was another choice around here. Comcast is so cocky. I remember when I first bought my house, and
the upper channels on my cable TV service were fuzzy. I called them to maybve schedule a service visit to fix the
problem, and the lady on the phone told me that those channels were supposed to be fuzzy, because they
hadn't upgraded the cables in my area yet! I said, "Well, I'm paying full price to get all these channels, and I can't
watch some of them?" She said there was nothing they could do.

Boo to comcast. When we get DSL in my area, I'll probably switch. If I live that long...

Should get my upgrade tomorrow. I can't complain about Comcast yet, I've been at 1.8Mb for a while with pretty decent uploads too.

Anyone got WOW cable? I pay $69.99 for full basic cable with 4Mb/s download and 500Kb/s upload. I think their digital packages are a decent price too. You can check if its available here. Here's my speed test:

running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 0.53Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 4.29Mb/s
You are connected to a 100 Mbps Full-Duplex link
Information: Other network traffic is congesting the link

I have the same thing and it rocks! I haven't been down since I got it since September. Before that I had comcast for a few years. I had good service but you can't beat the speed and price of WOW.
