College Should be Free

College is overrated. Giving people a free an education is not going to be a fix all like you think.

Edit: nothing is "free" the money has to come from somewhere.

Life isn't a free ride, okay. You can't expect everything to just be handed to you on a plate. If you're complaining about yourself not being able to afford a college education, there is a thing called financial aid. Depending on where you go it might not cover all your expenses but from my own personal experience they should provide you with enough to go full time at a state college. You don't have to pay back these grants either. So there you go, a free college education right there.

Are these public or private universities? Private universities are often WAY too expensive. You can get a quality edumacation if you go to a public university and you won't break the bank doing so...

some ppl can't make it through public grammar or high schools, so i don't see how free college would reduce welfare or crime.

exactly, some people are just losers

There are plenty of people at my college that are paying to go there and they're still failing. There's no hope for some people, they are a waste of space.

Taking out the loans you need to go to college is like investing in your own future. Its expensive to go to school, even state school, but I am pretty sure just about everyone can afford it if they put forth enough effort to get accepted.

Ok so you would prefer to throw your tax money away by giving 50 billion to Africa or Iraq or whatever else countries we are giving 50 billion to

Tell that to...

And that's with a total gross income for the entire family before taxes in the $40,000 range.

Note that I'm not complaining about anything but the rich kids who could just write a check, but insist on taking up state and federal grants anyway.

huh? What does Iraq or Africa have to do with this? I am pointing out the fact there is no such thing as "free" education.

when was the last time you saw a heroin addict that wanted to go to college?
you know any gang bangers that have applied to harvard and were accepted but just couldn't afford it?

i didn't think so

people that want an education figure out a way to get one, most people on welfare and many that are in prison are there because of their choices in life, not because college cost too much money

not all people in prison are from gangs or drugs and i didnt say it would elminate it, it would cut down on the number of people in prison and welfare

no, it would make no difference, the money still has to come from somewhere (presumably taxes, since that is where libs pay for all "Free" social programs). free college will not cut down on the number of people in prison and welfare. it won't. nope. not today, not next week , not ever.

FoBoT, is it just me or is OP trying to defend free college education as something liberals would be against and something conservatives would support?

i have no clue, i just had some raw meat for lunch and was just feeling fiesty 😀

When I went to college most people didn't want to be there and were only there because their parents wanted them to, they partied, and/or did the bare minimum to get by.

I would much rather have that money spent on people who are dying and starving by the millions, not whiny college students.

Aid that can help build new markets for our goods and services, thereby pumping money back into the country down the road.

what the fvck are you smoking...
the part of Africa we gave aid (AGAIN)to has nothing to offer us... we already deal with the countries in Africa that are worth a damn.

that money is a pure write off we wont see anything back from this bullsh1t humanitarian aid... like I said before take care of our own problems first..
screw the rest of the world..

free college for everyone (that qualifies or wants to go) would be very good for this country...
beleive it or not there are alot of smart qualified people out there that could benefit from college but dont meet the grants or other scholarships that only help a select few people get.

What about a little bit of a price break if you transfer with an AA to a State school? I had to pay my way through school and it was HELL! For a while I had to load all of my classes onto the days I had off work. I am really surprised my g/f stuck around.

Maybe, but personally I pay for my own college by working.
I didn't qualify for any money from scholarships or grants or anything. So instead of b!tching about it I work any pay and live on my own. Maybe thats just cause I want to do something with my life.
Editing to spell money correctly, damn my fingers.

It is not a right to receive a college education. Just like it is not a right to receive and keep a driver's license.

Get over it.

I got mine from the Military...
so I'm not bitching about my own situation..
I earned mine the hard way as well.

But other countries place alot more emphesis on education.
the US does not we would rather waste our countries money helping POS 3rd world counties that have 0 to offer us..

Im sick and tired of it.

i believe newyork state schools offer free tuition if you maintain a B average. room and board and other fees still apply. they funded it mostly from the state lottery. im not sure if this still goes on but it used to.

you cant just offer free college to anyone. there have to be certain standards or it would be a complete waste of money.

Not very likely, unless they have rich parents. You still have to eat and live somewhere with electricity, yeah?

Like Uppsala said, it's free here in Sweden, and you normally borrow funds to live on during the studies from the government (and receive some you don't have to pay back), provided you complete a certain amount of the courses you take every term.

Uppsala said you had to qualify to get in, but there of course some(quite alot) not very popular (because they suck in terms of quality, or because they are considered mindnumbingly boring by most) programs at many universities that nevermind your grades, as long as you've passed in the required ones. Hell, even if you are trying to get onto a program that required you to have quite high grades to enter, at a university somewhere, most programs still allow a certain amount of students in (like 40%) based on a test, a 'pre-university test', that you can do. All you have to do then is be somewhat intelligent, and good at most of the five or six subjects that test covers (reading comprehension, english, logic/maths, funky words, etc).

This produces a lot of people who go through educations with as much enthusiasm as a roadkill (like me 😛 ), but also, in my view, gives people a more fair chance to study at a university, if they feel like it. I am far too lazy to even begin thinking how fun it must be to study at the same time as you are working to both pay for your living, AND the university fees.
