Free public higher education IS a liberal statement moron.

Just because higher education is free does not mean more people will be able to go. Right now most colleges already offer huge amounts of money deductions. And in many cases, in some private schools, if they feel you should come to this school, they WILL find the money for you.

A lot of nations have free universities but their welfare and crime isn't necessarily lower than ours. Not to mention just because the college is free doesn't mean you're smart enough to get in. THe people on welfare and go to jail did'nt drop out of college because they couldn't afford, they just didn't go in the first place because they have no motivation to succeed (this is a sweeping generalization of course)

And government subsidized anything requires more taxes, more government involvement, everything conservatives are against. How about this, China offers a free college education. If colleges were free, it wouldn't be long before they became bloated and inefficient. They would turn into the weak institutions that the majority of public high schools in the US have become. When you are in college, you want to be in class with people that can think for themselves and actually have worthwhile contributions. Most people will get a lot more out of an education when their money is paying for it, rather than just being handed a free education.

I think poorly distributed is a better description. My highschool was ridiculously rich. One year all teachers received ibooks, the next year they got them new dell laptops, the nextyear they all got docking stations + LCDs. Plus we also upgraded our entire computer lab. But then I read about inner city schools that are grossly underfunded.
