no it shouldnt be, but at least some of it should be tax deductible...

why shouldnt it be? this is a typical liberal statment to say something with no reason behind it

Actually, a liberal statement would be that education (along with food, healthcare, etc.) should all be government subsidized. His statement actually sounds Republican to me. Maybe deep down, you're actually a bleeding heart liberal. 🙂

it is free if you earn it.

I think it needs to be said again.

COLLEGE IS FREE IF YOU EARN IT!

Not necessarily (at least in Canada) -

CASE 1: When I started engineering (about 11 years ago), I had the 3rd highest graduating average at my high school, and 2nd highest of enrolling students into my program. My total scholarships == $250 (local community award). This was thanks to Affirmative Action, which gave scholarships to girls with much lower grades.

AFAIK, most of those girls just used the scholarship to take all of the general 1st year courses, and then transferred into their desired programs (science, arts) after first year. Only a few stuck through, and they would have done it w/o a scholarship.

CASE 2: My wife, who just finished her master's degree with a 4.0 GPA, was rejected for EVERY scholarship she applied for during her program. She was rejected because they said I should be paying for her, since I am working.

We were screwed as well once we were married. I was in a sweet Co-op program at school, and I would have been debt-free if I didn't have to also pay my wife's tuition. My income as a student made her ineligible for almost every scholarship.

My wife's scholarship fund != my savings account.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
If you really want to get a free education (in Canada), see if you meet any of the following criteria:
- Are you female, and going into a science degree?
- Are you too lazy to work?
- Are you of Aboriginal descent, or a member of a visible minority?

If so, congratulations! Your education is free!

Hard work and determination have very little application up here, I'm afraid...

No it shouldn't. Because if college was absolutely free then everyone graduating from high school would go straight to college and then we would lose all of the blue collar workers and our economy would come to a halt. While college is great, it's not for everyone. I would hate to sit another four years with some of the idiots that i sat next to in high school.

To be honest, I think that's a terrible, elitist point of view. You're saying that college should cost money in order to deprive people of education and keep them in the "blue collar" jobs.

You're forgetting that universities still require testing to get in, so the idiot in high school wouldn't be with you at university anyway. However, free universities would mean that the smart, but poor kid in high school has a much better chance (aside from just applying for loans/grants/scholarships) at getting a good college education.

I currently take out roughly $15K/year to cover what my scholarship does not.

I still don't think college should be free.

yeah i know it is a bit...though i'm a little confused as to how much it is, i mean some of the loans i know you don't pay taxes on at least for a while...but if you're paying the tuition is that deductible...don't know too much bout it

For the first 2 years 50% of the cost is a tax credit for the person responsible for the tutition (Hope Credit)
After that and for continuing education %20 of the cost is a tax credit for the person responsible for the tutition (Lifetime Learning Credit).

I agree, college should be free. So I expect to see a check of at least $200 from everybody here to pay for my two kids' college education. Hell, tell you what. Why don't you go ahead and make it $500 a piece so I can send them to a good private school too.

College Should be Free, they can pay for it with the money they would save on welfare and prisons and people would also make more and then pay more taxes also

some ppl can't make it through public grammar or high schools, so i don't see how free college would reduce welfare or crime.

i did not say it would elminate it now did i, i said it would lower it and it would.

hypocrite

if college were free some people would be permanent students to keep from getting a job. overall a very bad idea

highschool is free and there i dont remeber to many permant students there, i do see your point and they could have some limits to keep it too certain number of years and maintain a certain gpa or something

Uh no, high school is not free. Ask your mom and dad how their tax money is going to go into your future high school education.
