ho noes! kids drink before they turn 21!!

Its a bullsh!t rule anyway. I had to register for selective service when I was 18 but I can't drink until I hit 21? That makes a whole lot of sense.

I don't binge like these girls seem to, but drinking is a part of the social life at probably every accredited school in the country. This judge sounds like a right winger fundy on a crusade. It was dumb as hell to put the website up, but expecting college girls who drank in highschool not to drink in college? That's ludicrous.

please keep your troll bait in P&N

Who is trolling? :disgust:

i think the drinking laws are stupid, but these girls got what they deserved... complete lack of respect for the court system

Thats awesome, I'm glad to see the rules apply for everyone and not just the kids who've taken the blunt of punishment throughout most of HS.

here is another reason why troy high > troy athens

and why doesn't judge martone think his own son drank before he was of age?

Troll bait? All I can say is I'm glad I grew up when common sense still prevailed and federal cases were not made out of crap like this.

Did you see all the quotes from that mother? She was constantly trying to make it sound like the judge was crazy. I think she's the one that's crazy. And that name. Geez!

These girls are stupid. I disagree with the drinking age and the harsh penalties that come with it, but these girls are morons.

Oh come on!
Who didn't drink before a high school dance? Who here never drank in High School? I bet those who can truthfully answer yes are in the minority.

And these girls paid their dues for it. They lost Honor Status, got put on probation, and all of this was made public. Now, in college, they excercise a little freedom of speach, and civil disobediance and they get more punishment for it. I think that judge needs to lighten up a bit. I think he did enough when they got busted in the Spring.

I never did, but that's irrelevant. They knowingly broke the law and received a slap on the wrist the first time. They knowingly broke the law a second time and took pictures! That's just asking for trouble.

Why do you think that the judge should ignore future incidents? They posted the evidence on the internet. What were they thinking? I don't find underaged drinking to be a big deal, but these girls acted very foolishly.

I agree that it makes no sense that we can serve in the military at 18, yet not drink until 21. However, my disagreement with this does NOT give me a free pass to break the law.

I realize that it is common for underage college students to drink, but it doesn't mean that the judge, upon finding evidence of probation violations and contempt of court, should look the other way b/c "we all know college kids drink." If he did, that would be ludicrous.

Join the military, go to Europe, and drink legally. Worked for me!

Before? We used to drink at the dances. They weren't quite as intent on killing John Barleycorn in the early 70's.

That sounds like a good plan. People use the "You can die for your country" argument, but how many soldiers get shot on US soil (so no drinking under 21) defending their country? In the meantime, you may get killed overseas, but at least you can drink there! 😛

drinking isn't a fundamental right as a citizen of the united states - voting is. would you rather have a say in who sends you to fight, or enjoy a drink instead? IMO, the people who use the argument "i can be sent to war but cant have a drink" have no clue how wrong that statement is. to me, it is one of the most unpatriotic things one could possibly say because it shows how little people care about voting and america.

im not calling you unpatriotic, and not saying you dont care about voting, but damnit man, use a better argument for the advocation of a lower drinking age.

Fvcking morality police. Over a web site? He is damn lucky he didn't get his house vandalized. I bet he gives kids a year in prison for marijuana possession

Over a website documenting the commission of an infraction for which the girls had ALREADY been caught and placed on probation!

Also, he never would have found them had they not thumbed their nose at him BY NAME.

The girls did wrong, but imho the judge made it personal. His quote here makes me feel that way:

"You know, it's just a crying shame. I work my butt off trying to help kids like this, trying to figure out what works. And then they do things like this."

imho it would have been better for another judge to handle the probation violations.

Judges are human too, and I am willing to bet he was a little more than just saddened when he saw that website.

I agree, but only so that no ninnies could cry foul. I can't imagine any judge that would not throw the book at you for being stupid enough to not only repeat your offense, but to mention the sentencing judge by name on the internet in conjunction with pictures of you doing it again.

Military law states that no member may drink under 21, regardless of station.

?? BullSh*t. In the states that is true, but overseas the militarys drinking age laws follow local laws.

Most important quote:
In an exchange of about 45 minutes, Martone reminded her to be honest, as Meerschaert first evaded some questions, then admitted that her Web site did use profanity aimed at Martone, and that she had a drinking problem.

He sentenced her to 30 days in the Oakland County Jail. She was marched off in handcuffs, to spend Christmas and New Year's Day behind bars.

Martone then sentenced Stesney to 15 days. The two become cellmates.

Their parents were stunned.

Stesney's mother, Cheryl Stesney, who would not let her daughter comment for this report, said Martone "let his anger get out of control. He was just so hurt and embarrassed by that Web site."

Polly Meerschaert agreed. "I do feel this is all about vengeance. I won't say my daughter didn't make a mistake. But the minute it became personal, the judge should've removed himself," she said.

The last part is very true. Clear conflict of interest, whether well-founded or not.

How is that a conflict of interest? You're saying if i was before a judge, and i didn't like him, and decided to defame him, i could get a different judge?
