Meerschaert, now 18, later told Martone she did it because she felt "betrayed by the legal system."

Gee, can we say "cop out"???

Let's face it. These kids did wrong. They broke the law. When the judge was lenient on them, and let them go with probation (plus, I'm sure, their parents pooh-poohed over them, telling them they did nothing really wrong), they took it as a joke, and decided to get back at the judge, publicly, on the internet.

In doing so, they hung themselves, by showing that they were breaking the rules of their probation by drinking and/or being around others that were drinking. Ooops!! Hey, guess what?? Now you're going to JAIL!!!

I applaud the parents that saw this for what it was, and supported the judge. I think the others that complained should have sat in a cell for a couple days, with their kid, so they'd know how serious this really was. I also applaud the judge, who showed these kids that they're not above the law, and also that while the law can be harsh, it can also be lenient to those who are willing to learn from their mistakes. Too bad the parents of these girls couldn't have taken the time out of their busy lives to teach them that lesson!

Here is a definition of "Contempt of Court".

Link

I'd say that is pretty much what these kids did, so the Judge was well within his rights to send them to jail.

Cool, a story from my neck of the woods. I've had the privilage of seeing these Martone "courtroom" assemblies and the description in the article is waaay off. Apparently, the author of the article thinks that we were awed and stunned bny the "brutality" oif the court system.

Nah. No one really cared.

After it weas over, we would just all laugh at the TV lawyers fighting to get on the local news station cameras.

Basically if you get any Alcohol related offense (MIP, DWI, Drunk and Disorderly) you WILL draw Martone and he WILL give you the max allowable sentence.

Of courses there actions caused zero problems except for stupid laws saying it is illegal.

By that same logic, I'm free to wave a gun around in someone's face, so long as I don't pull the trigger. And don't say guns and alcohol cannot be compared, because many gun advocates feel that alcohol is more dangerous. Plus, at least guns DO have a REAL positive purpose in society, unlike alcohol.

Not that I care either way... just sayin'. :) Just because they didn't get in a car YET doesn't mean they weren't going to.

you're comparing kids drinking to loosen up with waving guns in peoples faces...

If I read this right the parents are upset that their daughters cannot be called "honor students" when it's painfully obvious they're NOT honor students????

Edit: Just saw the pics of the girls. Two butterfacers and a man face........eeeck!

ho noes! kids drink before they turn 21!!

Its a bullsh!t rule anyway. I had to register for selective service when I was 18 but I can't drink until I hit 21? That makes a whole lot of sense.

I don't binge like these girls seem to, but drinking is a part of the social life at probably every accredited school in the country. This judge sounds like a right winger fundy on a crusade. It was dumb as hell to put the website up, but expecting college girls who drank in highschool not to drink in college? That's ludicrous.

I agree that it makes no sense that we can serve in the military at 18, yet not drink until 21. However, my disagreement with this does NOT give me a free pass to break the law.

I realize that it is common for underage college students to drink, but it doesn't mean that the judge, upon finding evidence of probation violations and contempt of court, should look the other way b/c "we all know college kids drink." If he did, that would be ludicrous.

Underage drinking was only part of it. Those girls violated their probation by drinking and being around people who were drinking. Violating probation can be jail time depending on the judge.

On a side note. Those girls are just plain stupid. Everyone knows you get wasted after the prom.

That's hilarious. The girls deserved everything they got. I won't deny that I drank while I was underage, but these girls went about it in a profoundly stupid way. They know schools crack down on drinking at prom, they were idiots for thinking they'd get away with it (and for that reason alone she deserved to be stripped of her NHS sash - they shouldn't let idiots in the National Honor Society). Then posting pictures of herself drinking when she knew she was on probation for drinkin - that was beyond idiotic.

The girl's parents seemed to care more about whether she could wear her sash than about their daughter's drinking. Nice parenting.

See, you lost all your points right there. Kids drinking to loosen up? Yeah, that works.

Besides, I'm not a redneck. Don't you think a redneck would enjoy both guns and beer? Try again.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way.

But like others said, they violated probation. Not only that, but they did it in an incredibly immature way.

Something tells me these girls aren't ready to play like an adult.

they didnt get jail time for underage drinking, they got jail time for contempt of court for disobeying direct order by a judge not to consume alcohol as part of thier PROBATION.

the moral of the story is, dont be on probation and be given a direct order by a judge not to drink, then make a website with pictures of you drinking and with profane comments directly pointed at the judge who put you on probation. you thumb your nose at the court, your gonna get bitch slapped.
