listen to the full mashup, its not just the solo bits that line up.

i want a version with just the lyrics from coldplay and just the music from satch, i think that would sound the best :p

I love Satch and I do not care much for Coldplay.

It does sound like Coldplay essentially took Satch's song and put lyrics to it. The key, tempo, chords . . . all the same. It's as if they didn't even try to change it - except for the entire adding lyrics to it.

I haven't really been a Satriani listener since I was a fairly serious guitar player as a teenager (which was an embarrassing number of years ago). There's no getting around the fact that he's an amazing talent, in any case. I like the first couple of Coldplay records, though the last couple have been poor and I find them personally kind of irritatingly sanctimonious. All of that being said, IMO this is a clear enough case of plagiarism that the case will never see a courtroom - Coldplay will have to pay Satriani, and the payday to him will be considerably more than he has ever made on a single song in his life. Tough titty for CP, but them's the breaks when you steal.

OK, now that I have heard the mash-up, it is the same exact freaking song.

What is funny is that whenever I hear the Coldplay song, I think of this

Coldplay wins song of the year

Coldplay won the first of the Grammy Awards' big three honors Sunday evening, taking home song of the year -- a songwriters' honor -- for "Viva La Vida," from the band's album of the same name.

heh, its funny, I've hear that tune samples in trance for a decade now, at least from the early 90's on. I think Joe might have sampled it earlier, but to anyone who listens to trace/rave would probably be like "whoa..I've heard that beat before.."

You can't win a plagiarism suit unless you have conclusive evidence that they really did steal from you. Just sounding alike is not enough -- it could be a coincidence, both parties could have been inspired by a third source, etc. It would be really tough for Satriani to win.

I really don't care either way.

I just hate Coldplay and wanted to say that.:p

Coldplay is great. Satriani needs to go back to quietly sucking.

I don't see how a song that is a complete ripoff of another song can win "song the the year"

Am I the only one that finds that completely insane?

I used to, yes. I've been listening to Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan all day, with some Joe Satriani mixed in, inspired by the news story. I do like some of his stuff but the majority of it I would expect to hear in an elevator. :)

Anybody see them on 60 Minutes tonight? They came off very well.

Their music is not for me, but they seem to be a bunch of likable guys.

I like Coldplay and I don't care what anyone thinks about that.

The similarities are pretty remarkable, but it strikes me as a little odd given that Coldplay could likely just buy rights to the damn tune if they wanted it.

I've pretty well had it with Coldplay. They're talented and, IMO, decent guys, but at the end of the day their music is today's Asia or Air Supply. They're sanctimonious tools and don't really have anything interesting to say.
