The riffs sound pretty close and definitely sound the best together. I say they re-release the song with them together, split the profit, everybody wins.

I remember years ago I got free tickets and backstage passes from a buddy to a Satriani show. After the show we all went backstage and waited around for awile before the staff made everybody get in line to meet Satriani. Satriani showed his face for 10 minutes to sign autographs for the people in line, then he dissappeared into his private room. I wonder what happened to the ticket stub with his autograph on it, probably in a landfill somewhere.

If you listen to the song long enough (about a minute) yeah, it looks like they probably ripped him off. But really, just how many different combinations can you put together before songs all sound like something made before? Hell, someone could have been in an elevator and not even noticed hearing the elevator music version of Satriani's song. :p

The song isn't identical - Coldplay couldn't be original enough to create something (obviously) like Satch can.

The solo part and the Coldplay song ARE identical. The beat, inflection in the guys voice, etc. It's exactly the same.

uh wat?

http://www.stereoboard.com/content/view/271/9/

that article is over two years old and apparently false. according to wiki:

"Although the chord progressions sound similar, they do in fact differ as "Mary Jane's Last Dance" follows "Am, G, D, Am" (A Dorian mode), while "Dani California" follows "Am, G, Dm, Am" (A minor). University of Chicago musicologist Travis Jackson said the songs' chord progressions were similar, but were a "pretty standard groove" in music and not necessarily evidence of copying.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Petty denied rumors that he planned to sue the Chili Peppers and said, "I seriously doubt that there is any negative intent there. And a lot of rock & roll songs sound alike." Petty went on to say that The Strokes admitted that they took Tom Petty's riff for "American Girl" and used it in their song "Last Nite"."

if Satriani actually said "I felt like a dagger went right through my heart. It hurt so much", i have to lmao at him.

here is another classic example that was resolved by a musicologist...

Satriani is a very emotional guy, very tied to his music, and he is always one to admit influence. He will often say "I was listening to Hendrix and this thing he did at this part, it grabbed me.. So I started messign with it, played around with it, and I came up with this"

If what he says is true, that its a song written for his wife, that he spent alot of time on, thinking through, etc. I'm sure when he heard his song rehashed as a coldplay tune a bit starttling.

edit: did you listen to the mashup? It's beyond just borrowing ideas. You can line the tracks up and they are the same tempo, same changes, same melody, same inflections. There are too many similarities. I'm not a "Musicologist" but I've written alot of music, produced and mixed and mastered alot of music, and I know theory. They copied.

That's why you can play them inline and they sound good together. It's the same thing. I seriously bet Coldplay loaded that Satriani song up into Protools as track 1, and built their song around it.

The way I look at it, 'pleasurable' sounding chord progressions always follows a nostalgic pattern so if chord progressions alone were to be patented, there would be too many lawsuits across the board and modern music would sound completely alien to most people.

However in this case where the chord progression is the same as well as the KEY of the progression is the same, it is a bit hard to swallow. As far as Coldplay's vocal melodies are concerned, it's very difficult to diverge from the similarity of Satriani's melodies because naturally and theoretically in terms of music theory of rock music, it will come to a similar idea so the indiscriminate listener may perceive it as the same melody when the arrangement of notes may be 'slightly' off.

In the end, they could've just played the song in another key and do a jazzy 'wrong notes' vocal performance and nobody would've known.

you mean uh "sampling"?

While I think that "sampling" is stupid and only used by talentless hacks, in this case it's pretty much the whole song except for the lyrics.

Ummm...all bands sample. Even the Beatles used samples.

As a guitarist, I think Satriani is right. It's god-near impossible for two people to come up with the exact same thing (because if you look at it musically, it is) at such a suspicious time.

Not really, there are many examples of the same chord progression in different songs.

That said, I do believe that Coldplay plagiarized the riff even if it was subconsciously.

yeah....the oasis/greenday debacle....greenday/poparoach....beatles/offspring...

you can only do so much with common time.
