Soft drink companies reach benzene deal

"Coca-Cola was sued Friday in an attempt by parents to force soft drink makers to eliminate ingredients in their products that can form cancer-causing benzene.

The complaint against the soft drink giant came as two other companies settled a lawsuit over benzene, which is linked to leukemia.

Atlanta-based In Zone Brands Inc., maker of BellyWashers, and Preston, Wash.-based TalkingRain Beverage Co. agreed to change ingredients and offer refunds. District of Columbia Superior Court judge Mary Terrell dismissed that case Friday morning.

Similar suits are pending in Kansas, Massachusetts, Florida, California and New Jersey. Plaintiffs added Coke's Vault Zero energy drink to the Kansas lawsuit, which also targets Pepsi's Diet Wild Cherry and Kraft's Crystal Light Sunrise Classic Orange.

Boston lawyer Andrew Rainer, who represents the parents, said the settlement should prod bigger companies to change their ingredients.

"I think if they understand that consumers, and perhaps courts, expect them to eliminate this problem, they will," Rainer said."

you = dumbass.

there are times when suing a company is a good thing.

Does Coca-Cola FORCE you to drink their products? You know good and damn well than any product consumed besides natural water could possibly be a risk to your health.
Consumers playing ignorant seems to be the norm today.. Play ignorant; hire a lawyer and sue.. thats all this amounts to..

Now that you mention that, my wife did tell me a while back not to keep soda in my car when it's hot. Her mother is deathly afraid of anything that has been linked to cancer. She had her using aluminum free deodorant for a while but the stuff sucked.

That aluminum thing causing alzheimers is overhyped. My grandfather was metallurgist and machinest(sp?) for an aircraft company. He has been around aluminum shards, dusts and vapors all his life. He didn't wear a mask or breathing equipment, because he hated them.
He died in his mid nineties with his sharp wit and humor.

And regarding your comment about "this lawsuit happy society," it doesn't sound like they're looking for any money based on what you posted.

"Store in a cool dry place", no?
That's what it says, which eliminates the heat issue, since it shouldn't be exposed to heat.
As far as light, well, most cool dry places are fairly sheltered from light.

You're doing a horrible job of it. I'd explain why, but since I already have in this thread I won't waste my time on you.

Edit: And also, acting childish is a great way to prove a point.

I don't believe there is any warnings or labels on my microwave in the kitchen. I should therefore sue the microwave manufacturers since they can cause radiation poisening, right

I agree. I've worked in a place with tons of aluminum shards, and dust for years. Somedays you're literally coated in the stuff. I'm sure your lungs are too. But causing Alzheimers? I can't even remember the last guy at the plant that had it.

When operated properly, no they don't. However, if you poke a giant hole in the door and place your nuts in the microwave, it very well may. I suggest you try it out and consult your lawyer.

i guess that's why out of the billion people who drink coke, the number of people who get cancer from benzene is what? you can't prove benzene from coke causes cancer. living life itself causes cancer. a drop of benzene in a soda pop will NOT give you cancer.

Duh!

They dont have benzine in Coca Cola. Somehow it is interacting with something else and forming bezine due to some kind of chemical reaction. The Article does not even say what is causing the problem. It is lousy reporting. It is my guess that first of all CocaCola is not going to discuss their Formula in Public and we might want to know what mixed with coke is causing this. This might be some drug or something like an atacid that forms the benzine.

It is insane what food companies are allowed to get into food under the label that it is a preservative. I am not a granola crunchy type of all natural person but I have seen how preservatives and additives affect my kid, especially artificial dyes. My kid actually has physical type symptoms to dyes it that most people would dismiss in their own kids unless they knew to look at it. The most obvious symptom that most can't seem to overlook is ADD type behavior. Hyper is a myth in my mind since he is alright with sugar. You could pump syrup in his veins and he?s cool as a cucumber. Just try to find a candy or party treat that does not contain a dye or preservative. When kids go off the wall they probably have had additive that causes a dull buzzing type head rush and uneasiness that just has them strung out and twitchy.

Anyhow, When you combine sodium benzoate or potassium benzoate (common preservatives) with Vitamin C it reacts to form Benzene which has always been known to cause cancer. Read the labels on the kid fruit juices and you?ll know how hard it is to give them something that doesn?t have this crap in it.

So first you say we shouldn't warn people about everything and sue companies for negligently harming their consumers without warning, now you're saying it doesn't matter because in your quite informed medical opinion benzene won't cause cancer... so which is it?
