CNN to replay 9/11 attacks coverage

NEW YORK - CNN will mark the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks by replaying on the Internet the cable network's coverage of that day's events.

Viewers can watch how events unfolded starting at 8:30 a.m., minutes before the first reports of an airplane hitting the World Trade Center. The feed will run in real time, as the network showed it five years ago, until midnight.

For the day, CNN will make its online video service, CNN Pipeline, available for free. Normally, viewers pay $2.95 a month or $24.95 a year for four separate video feeds.

Online viewers will be able to watch live reports of memorial services through one of the feeds. So that viewers won't accidentally stumble upon graphic footage from 2001, the replay feed will be covered with a notice instructing users to click only if they want to watch.

"Our users may choose to view the stream of coverage from Sept. 11, 2001, or live coverage of memorial services at Ground Zero, or they may click through the numerous interactive elements on the site," said David Payne, senior vice president and general manager of CNN.com. "They have the power to determine the best way for them to remember the anniversary."

This will be cool, I remember when it happened I was glued to the TV for like 2 weeks straight

I'm not sure what's more painful, the actual event or the milking of it for commercial and political purposes since.

Couldn't agree more.

I refuse to watch anything 9/11 related including promos for movies and such. It's entirely too soon.

Watching it unfolding live on TV on 9/11/2001 was very painful. I am not going to watch it again. 🙁

What, you don't have matching 9/11 coffee mugs, 9/11 coasters, and 9/11 coffee table book?

You hate America or something?

Oh yes of course I've got multiple sets! Heck I've even got the replica twin towers that when you throw objects at them little plastic people spring out of the windows. I unsuccessfully tried to set them on fire for the fun of it but instructions say they ignite with jet fuel only. 🙁 Collectors edition, made by Hasbro!

And then theirs my sterling silver model of the Pentagon with a big divet missing from one side. Limited edition from the Franklin Mint, sure to be worth buku bucks in a few years!

In all honesty I completely agree with you.

But I'm mostly posting to award you with the most creative spelling of beaucoup I've ever seen!

Don't forget the ribbon

Cedric: Why don't you want to wear the ribbon?
Kramer: Why should I?
Cedric: You have to, everyone is.
Kramer: That's why I don't want to.

Hah... I think 99% of the people who use that word don't know how to spell it - and probably have never even seen it in print

Damn, I made no association between those two words :Q

I am more pained by the rising costs of gas than any of the dumbass events from 5 years ago. I should make a 24 hour video of the pennies counting up on a gas tank.

If CNN is showing the feed in real time, then they're probably not going to show ads, since I don't think we saw ads for "Head-On: Apply directly to the forehead. Head-On: Apply directly to the forehead. Head-On: Apply directly to the forehead." on 9/11/2001 ...

To be honest, I'd LOVE to see this coverage in it's entirety.

Hopefully it's made available for download somewhere. Some of the early reports were UTTERLY HILLARIOUS in how wrong they were. There was talk of a truck-bomb going off at the State Department, which turned out to be another plane crashing into the Pentagon, shootings on the mall, etc. Watching it live, it seemed like the whole damned country was under seige - when in reality, it was, relatively speaking, a minor event.

A minor event? Thousands of people died and you're calling it a "minor event"? That would make a Columbine shooting what... a nuisance?

Hah... CNN plays those ads? Only time I see them is after Jeopardy. But I never watch live TV so I rarely see ads.

Worst. Ads. Ever.

But they're effective.

Agreed, also people should remember to NEVER FORGET. 5 years have passed, I'd say we're due for a reminder...

I don't think there was anything UTTERLY HILLARIOUS [SIC] about the coverage of the 9/11 attacks. They did what they could with what they had to work with. Calling what was arguably the most significant event in the last 5 years a "minor event" is UTTERLY HLLARIOUS [SIC].

I'll watch it, as I wasn't around a TV when it first happened so I want to see how it first happened. I for one hate this making money of 9/11 crap also, but this is no where near as bad as making a movie or anything is it? They are mainly doing it to remember, and of course do some serious advertising on the side.

Soft spot, eh? There's nothing funny or amusing about people dying, but there is a lot funny and amusing about how badly the media f'd up that morning. Broadcasting unsubstantiated claims from people on the phone is nearly unforgivable. The national trauma level would have fallen significantly if the anchors hadn't been foaming at the mouth and just shut up and told us what they KNEW, not what they'd heard from a friend's friend on a cell phone with bad reception and an editor filled in the blanks mad libs style.

And compared to what the scope of the attacks seemed to be from listening to the news in the morning, the whole damn thing was a walk in the park. A few thousand people died, not "tens of thousands, possibly more!", four planes were hijacked, not "dozens, possibly more", there was no "possible nuclear retaliation" (seriously, I heard that on one of the big 3 broadcast networks, can't remember which) - and all of that was before anything even collapsed.

I drew an absolute blank spelling it. 😀 And that was coming from a francophone. 😱

I remember people/media suggesting the 9/11 death toll would be up to 50,000 people. I was very doubtful at the time....

I wonder how many people will turn on CNN and think it is happening NOW, because they have forgotten or never payed much attention in the first place 5 years ago.
