I have a video tape I recorded that day, just popped it in and hit record and started slowly flipping through channels. All 60 channels either showing coverage of it or showing a blank screen with a message saying they've ceased scheduled programming due to the events.

If CNN is showing the feed in real time, then they're probably not going to show ads, since I don't think we saw ads for "Head-On: Apply directly to the forehead. Head-On: Apply directly to the forehead. Head-On: Apply directly to the forehead." on 9/11/2001 ...

LMAO Very annoying but very effective!

I am more pained by the rising costs of gas than any of the dumbass events from 5 years ago. I should make a 24 hour video of the pennies counting up on a gas tank.

Given that you are probably about 12 years old, this wouldn't surprise me.

Well, in terms of death tolls and other damage - Katrina, the tsunami in Indonesia....etc.
Natural disasters excluded, however, I can't think of any that are bigger ATM...

Death toll isn't the whole story though. I don't think any event in recent history has had a bigger impact on world events than the September 11th attacks.

I'm not going to argue that. I guess it depends on how you gauge magnitude of a given event - whether it be solid numbers (death tolls, $$ in property damage) or perceived worldwide influence / impact of the event. IIRC, the death toll of the Indonesia incident was above 200k, however you are right - it didn't have the overall impact of 9/11.

Couldn't agree more.

I refuse to watch anything 9/11 related including promos for movies and such. It's entirely too soon.

What about something WW2 related?

Once again...IN THE US. You can bet that people in Indonesia think the tsunami was a MUCH bigger event than 9/11.

If you think the impact of 9/11 was limited to the US, you're delusional. There have been attacks on other countries just because they supported us after the attacks. The election in Spain was swayed by an attack because they supported us. There have been attacks in the UK because they supported us. The tsunami happened, the world pitched in and helped, but there has not been long-term effects, because it was an act of nature. If death toll is all that matters, then the tsunami was a more significant event. But you still see the ramifications of the 9/11 attacks in the news.

This may be true. However, the nature of the event plays a huge part. What has changed on a global basis as a result of the Indonesia incident? Nothing. Because a natural disaster of that magnitude is virtually impossible to defend against. All you can really do is rebuild what you can, and hope it doesn't happen again.

9/11, on the other hand, has sparked changes worldwide in airport security procedures, terrorism awareness, border scrutiny, etc. It has also changed many other things on the governmental level that the general public is probably not even aware of. Other things not directly related to terrorism have changed as well, in countries all over the world. Things like design specs for new buildings, the move away from skyscrapers in favor of shorter buildings, etc.

Ahaha mugs you're so arrogant.

You think the millions of people directly affected by the tsunami think sept11th was more significant? Let alone that hundreds of thousands died in the tsunami, as opposed to a piffling what 4k? If you think the WTC damage was incredible, i assume you haven't seen any footage of what the tsunami did to a massive portion of Indonesia's coastline?

Sure you Americans think Sept11th was the most important thing that happened, ever, in the world, but that's because it happened to you, and you happen to be an astonishingly inward looking nation ;)

Of course I don't think it was limited to the US; not at all. But apparently everyone thinks the tsunami was limited to Indonesia:confused:

If you're fed a diet of US news, you might get the general picture of the world, but obviously a bit US-biased...it's to be expected. I don't live in SE Asia, but I bet the ratio of tsunami:9/11 based news is a bit higher over there, and those people consequently think the tsunami had a greater global impact than we do, and we think 9/11 had a greater impact than they do.

No. Definitely not. But the world consists of far more than millions of people.

as opposed to a piffling what 4k?

See you're missing my point... the impact of 9/11 was not limited to the less than 3000 people who died in the attacks. Was Pearl Harbor limited to the 2400 people who died that day? Events do not happen in a vacuum.

I don't think the people of Afghanistan, Iraq, Turkey, Spain, the UK, Australia, Bulgaria, Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia, Hungary, Italy, Kazkhstan, Latvia, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Thialand, the Ukraine, or Japan would agree that the the 9/11 attacks were limited to the United States. All of those countries have had their citizens die as a direct result of the attacks. But death toll isn't the whole story.

Note that I did say 9/11 was arguably the most significant event in the world in the last 5 years. I did not say it was definitely the most significant event in the world in the last 5 years.

Edit: speaking of Indonesia, how about this

The Bali bombing is sometimes called "Australia's September 11" because of the large number of its citizens killed in the attack.

Man, you see what I get myself into when I'm drinking? I started out just disagreeing with EyeMWing about 9/11 being an insignificant event, and I end up arguing over what the most significant event in recent history is! :p

To be honest, I'd LOVE to see this coverage in it's entirety.

Hopefully it's made available for download somewhere. Some of the early reports were UTTERLY HILLARIOUS in how wrong they were. There was talk of a truck-bomb going off at the State Department, which turned out to be another plane crashing into the Pentagon, shootings on the mall, etc. Watching it live, it seemed like the whole damned country was under seige - when in reality, it was, relatively speaking, a minor event.

I don't think there was anything UTTERLY HILLARIOUS [SIC] about the coverage of the 9/11 attacks. They did what they could with what they had to work with. Calling what was arguably the most significant event in the last 5 years a "minor event" is UTTERLY HLLARIOUS [SIC].

Agreed, but I do get what he was saying.

The panic that the press coverage incited was fair, but way out of proportion.

My mom wanted me to drive home 70 miles from college because it was a couple of miles from one of the most notable Air Force Bases in the midwest because she thought I would be safer.

I wouldn't call it "Hilarious" by any means, but it will be interesting to try and figure out how people came to these judgements.

I believe Al Queda was only acting on behalf of the Russians. We should wrongfully invade that country next.
