Being shown as brealing news, South Korean Yonhap News Agency is reporting.

let the saber rattling begin.

Update:

Report: NK may have performed nuclear test

Wonder how this is going to effect our elections. Will it hurt Bush and company due to the fact they have pretty much ignored North Korea over the last 6 years, or will Bush and company claim we need them to protect us agaist this 'imminent threat' (putting words in their mouth).

http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/10/08/korea.nuclear.test.ap/index.html

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Monday the country has performed a successful nuclear test.

South Korean government officials also said North Korea performed its first nuclear test, the South's Yonhap news agency reported

According to KCNA, there was no radioactive leakage from the site.

South Korean officials could not immediately confirm the Yonhap report.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun convened an urgent meeting of security advisers over the issue, Yonhap reported.

The North said last week it would conduct a nuclear test as part of its deterrent against a possible U.S. invasion.

The report of the test came as Japan's new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe arrived in Seoul for meetings with President Roh Moo-hyun to address the nuclear issue as well as address strains in relations between the two countries over territorial and historical disputes.

North Korea accused rival South Korea on Monday of committing a serious provocation by firing warning shots during a weekend incident in which the South says soldiers from the communist North crossed over their border.

The border shooting came Saturday. South Korean soldiers rattled off about 40 warning shots after a group of five North Korean troops crossed into the southern side of the no-man's-land separating the divided Korean peninsula, South Korea said.

No one was hurt in the incident.

south korea says theyve performed a test, but we can't tell for sure if it's really been successful. Here's to Bush to letting NKs get nuclear weapons while we invade Iraq and find nothing.

Indeed. While we focus on Oil and the Middle East, Pakistan, India, and now North Korea have gotten nuclear weapons. (note: i am not equating all of those nations.)

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korean government officials said North Korea performed its first-ever nuclear weapons test Monday, the South's Yonhap news agency reported.

South Korean officials could not immediately confirm the report.

South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun convened an urgent meeting of security advisers over the issue, Yonhap reported.

The North said last week it would conduct a nuclear test as part of its deterrent against a possible U.S. invasion.

The director of South Korea's monitoring center that is watching for a test with sound and seismic detectors declined to immediately comment on the report. The U.S. Geological Survey said it had detected no seismic activity in North Korea, although it was not clear whether a blast would be strong enough for its sensors.

Clinton did a much better job when he dealt with North Korea, at least the Koreans were talking to us under Clinton. The man who has done the most to keep North Korea in check has to be Jimmy Carter.

A war with North Korea will be war that will be one, but the causalities will be enormous. There's no way we can afford to fight a war on three fronts.

I'll wait for confirmed reports from other countries (SK/Japan) first before believing this.
For all we know they may not have done it.

South Korea has confirmed the test. We do not know if it was successful though.

I just heard that's it's been confirmed by drudge on the radio. It's pretty easy to confirm these things seismically.

The reason why diplomacy hasn't worked and won't work on these nuclear issues is because these countries don't want money or food or trade. They want nuclear weapons. Dimplomacy is just a delaying tactic for North Korea and Iran.

The N. Korean news agency confirms it, but the report initially came from a S. Korean news agency.

As I put in my thread that started at the same time :)

Kind of reminds me of Pakistans tests in the late 90's.

umm total BS about Clinton dude, and for the sake of this thread lets talk about the future on not about the past.

Doesn't really matter who did what if we are dragged into a war right?

So what does this mean for N. Korea? All this talk about "if they test a nuke..." going on, so now that they've done it, now what? Nothing?

Why are you afraid? They did not launch a nuke at the US. They tested one off their shores, I think.
