I'm pretty sure Hollywood has the ability to make her as Egyptian looking as they expect her to look (and no more than that). Given that, the only thing that should matter is getting the best actor who can ACT the part believably and make the movie enjoyable to watch. In case you missed it... the key here is acting.

True, and Jolie is just the kind of seductive psycho bitch needed for the part. :)

People really care about this shit?

Yes, they also went ape shit when it was announced the next Spider Man would be black. Disliked the Karate Kid being black, and many also threw a hissy fit when the Honey Mooners were black in the movie. There's a common theme here.

That's funny, I have no problem with any of those... nor did anyone I know.

I had a problem with the Karate Kid learning Kung Fu.

Did they explain that at all in the movie?

Writing an opinion piece objecting to a white/native American woman (ethinic looking, not lilly white) playing Cleopatra rather than a black woman IS race baiting, Classy. I have no objection to ANYONE of ANY race playing her and am pointing out that the VAST majority of the evidence points to her being of mainly GREEK blood with a dash of Semitic.

It is YOU who is acting like a piece of shit here, Classy. You're defending an opinion piece that plays the race card and displays a clear ignorance of history. The author CLEARLY assumes Cleopatra was BLACK, Classy. AND then goes on a tyrade about how insulting it is to cast a light skinned person as Cleopatra. YOU even posted the article. I shall now post a snip of that article:

Again, SHE is the one who:

1. Has a CLEAR ignorance of the historical fact that Cleopatra was GREEK AND SEMITIC and that Ancient Egyptians were NOT BLACK.

2. Is ranting about race.

Not me, Classy. Her. And you, apparently.

And again, just so it can sink into that rock you call a brain:

Left to right
Libyan, Nubian, Asiatic, Egyptian.
Egyptian_races.jpg

NOT BLACK, Classy, no matter HOW much you, and the ignorant race baiting bitch from Essence wish them to be.

You are such an a-hole. In not one post did I say she is black......not one. She is not black or white, thats what I several others have tried to tell you, you stupid M*&)&)(*)(*)).

Whenever there is a discussion with facts, evidence, and generally educated comments, we can always depend on QueBert to break that trend with his delight in banality.

Let's take this thread as an example of my point. Cleopatra should not played by a black person according to uhh about 2/3rds of the posts in here. It's historically inaccurate and flat out wrong blah blah blah. She was Greek & Semitic blah blah blah. But these same people seem to be perfectly okay with someone who's not Greek or Semitic playing her. Jolie's skin really isn't all that olive. I'm not saying a black actress would have been a better fit for the role, but Jolie damn sure isn't right for it at all. As for my comments not being educated, just Google around. There's a petition to have the black actor playing in Spiderman Reloaded removed from the role, and it's got a decent amount of support. I'm sure at least a couple of the people who posted in this thread signed the Spider Man reloaded petition the second they found out about it. And another thing about this so called "generally educated" comments in this thread. People are posting as if they knew the bitch and have seen pictures of her.

"Cleopatra is one of those figures whose race often depends on the lens you use to view her," says Julia Perkins, associate director of community programs for the Art Institute of Chicago, where several images of a White Cleopatra abound. "As an African-American female, I tend to view her as a woman of color, but if you look at the images of Cleopatra that predominate, it's clear that that's not how Europeans have tended to view her."

Which means both white and black people are wrong. Ms Perkins is right by saying a woman of color, that she was. And that doesn't = black. Black people are bitching it isn't Vanessa Williams or Halle Berry playing her, but if it had been either, white people would be bitching up a storm. All I know is I've never seen a picture of her, as has nobody else. What she really looked like is speculation based off what people think she was.

I really don't give a rat's worthless ass who plays anyone in some stupid fucking movie. This kind of shit is totally meaningless and arguing over it is for idiots.

Fuck, cast the fattest ugliest black woman in the lead role for all I care...good luck at the box office though.

IMO, the only part of the rant they got right is:

Cleopatra should be played by a Woman"

Call me racist if you want, but a cross-dresser like RuPaul just wouldn't seem right in the part...

Otherwise, I don't give two shits if it's a white woman, black woman, Chinese woman, or American Eskimo who gets the part...as long as I can understand the dialog and she's a good actress. (which IMO, Jolie is NOT)

Big wall of text.

The only problem is the author in Essence said "this role should have gone to a Black woman." That's clearly limiting a woman of color to just a black person. This is why the the whole thread was started. When she asks her own rhetorical question of why a black actress is not picked, she follows it up with "especially when that role is an African queen." That seems to be clearly limiting the "women of color."

And it should be clearly limiting, it was discovered last year that Cleopatras mother was African. So I think it would make sense a person from Africa should portray Cleopatra. But I guess other peoples logic is to have Angelia Jolie play her. Hollywood and logic don't seem to mix. Sade probably looks much closer to what Cleopatra looked like than Jolie, dunno if she can act. But, she would have fit the appearance part much better IMHO.

I love how bullshit spreads.

Listen closely: A guy looked at a PHOTO of a skull LOST SINCE WWII reputed to be that of Cleopatra's SISTER and made a completely outrageous claim to be able to tell her racial mix. For some reason, this was published in the press while the overwhelming dissenting views were not.

And for the millionth time: African does not mean "black." There are many Caucasoid Africans, mostly in the north, even more so in antiquity.

Cleopatra, by a preponderance of the evidence, was from an inbreeding Greek family. She would not have appeared black by any means nor is any historical description of her as such.

Classy, she was predominately GREEK. Therefore an olive skinned Caucasoid, probably lighter skinned and definitely stronger Greek features (The hawk nose on her coins is a good clue) than the average semitic Egyptian.

She wasn't lilly white Northern European, but she WAS of predominately Caucasian Southern European decent.

So, quite simply, the author was wrong in both her ignorant ASSUMTION that Cleopatra was black African AND in her rage.

Call me all the names you want, but you've been nothing but wrong in this silly attempt to defend the ignorant race-baiting bitch from Essence (Racist) Magazine.

I never said African means black, oddly enough I brought up Sade, who's not even black she's Ethiopian. And I don't know nothing about this dude examining a picture of a skull. I'm talking about the actual remains of her sister being found. Never once did I say African = black, way to put words in my mouth. But, if you think Angelia Jolie would resemble Cleopatra more closely than a NON BLACK person like Sade, then go ahead and think that.

What about the team of people who found her sisters remains and claimed her mother (same as Cleopatras) was African. Now it would be an assumption either way to guess how she looks. You can be mixed and look as light as Mariah Carey, and you can be mixed and look like Halle Barry. If the findings were accurate it's possible she look like Halle, or maybe she looked like Mariah. You never know with 2 races mix what the outcome will be. It's amusing how you're attacking the chick who wrote the articlem yet everything you're saying is an assumption too. But I guess you're assumptions hold more weight because... well I don't know, but it appears that you think you're word is the law.

The woman is not a bitch. I didn't even pay attention to whether the person was male or female. She is entitled to her opinion and you yours. The info she uses is no more accurate or inaccurate then the sources you use.

This was my first post

The author is not saying the woman should definately be a black woman, what he is saying is that a black woman would be a better fit for the part than a white woman. And I don't know if that is necessarily true or false. Some Egyptian women are tanned and some not. I would assume in those days, before sunscreens, most folks had a darker complexion. Its good debate........

I definately would rather see Halle over someone like Jolie. There are some seriously good looking black women in Hollywood that easily rival in the looks department any other race of woman. No one race has a corner market on beauty in Hollywood.

As I stated very clearly I don't agee entirely with the writers assumption that it has to be a black woman. But given all the circumstances and questions surrounding Cleopatra, I think it would be no more far fetched having a black woman play the part, than it is having Jolie a white woman play the part. By my complaint with you and handful of others is, your attitude is a black woman is not good enough. There are a lot of black women better looking and more talented than Jolie. Lastly, its kinda funny the black woman who argues for a black woman to play the part is a race baiter. But here you are, a white person, arguing that a white woman should play the part. Well does that make you a race baiting bitch too?
