I was watching the local news one night this weekend and they were talking about all the headlines about this. They had a newspaper from some place in Jersey that had a headline of "HE TOOK IT IN THE BUTT"

I was cracking up for ten minutes.

I thought Clemens made a fool out of himself on national TV. He lost almost all credibility with me when he said he had no idea his best friend, and training partner, was getting shot in the ass with steroids by the guy who watched over Clemens' workouts. I thought Wallace hit him pretty hard when he asked him what McNamee had to gain by lying - Clemens had no answer because there is no answer. Lying would mean McNamee would face prosecution, so why would he go out of his way to throw his friend under the bus unless he was really afraid of the long dick of law?

Clemens' tirade about Vioxx was equally out of place, confusing, and suspicious. What he said basically came down to "there are legal things that I was taking that turned out to be dangerous ... [implied] so why is everyone making a big deal about steroids?" In general, I thought Clemens came off as too angry, too defiant, and too full of shit. The only credible thing he said was when he inquired who he was supposedly purchasing these steroids from.

His declaration that everyone was guilty until proven innocent in this country didn't jibe with me either. I'm really disappointed in Clemens. His actions surrounding the Mitchell Investigation, his unwillingness to come forward and speak until a month after the report was released, and his insistence that he knew nothing about steroids all makes it very, very suspicious. Sure, he's innocent until proven guilty, but I can't help thinking that an innocent man wouldn't have to hide behind a lawyer, hire a private investigator, and generally be such a big jerk about the whole thing.

intersting comment. on the local sports talk show last friday on the way home from work, one of the guys went out on a limb and said that he feels steroid useage is one of the best things that has happened to baseball in recent yearsm partially due to the excitement of more homeruns hit and records being broke. he even went as far as saying that he thinks the whole mitchell report is going to hurt the mlb in the long run because it'll lead to less steroid usage.

I care b/c it's Roger Clemens. I want to know why he would want to numb his butt by injecting Lidocaine into it.

Well it is one of the three biggest professional sports in the country. I agree that Congress does have better things to be doing, but, then again, without their intervention there would be no effort to clean up ANY sport.

Short sighted view. Let's say you believe steroid use makes baseball more exciting and thus that makes steroid use ok. Now everyone starts using steroids and within a few seasons you have plenty of batters who can easily put it out of the park. Now you have to change the game and extend the ballpark such that the homerun is a difficult curve to the steroid induced human. Now you are back where you started, except steroids is a requirement, and the baseball players are hurting themselves in the long run just to compete.

The only way they could maintain that excitement is by only allowing specific players to use steroids. Thereby turning baseball into the WWF of sports, with each team having their own hulk hogan. And once you realize that, it ruins the illusion and cheapens the thrill.

Or, you eliminate steroids and homeruns become the difficult yet possible goal they are supposed to be, but most hitters hit things infield, which makes more use of all of the players on the team and creates a more interesting base-to-base game. While not as glamorous, there is more content in the game and skill is being properly rewarded.

It's hardly worthless. MLB is worth quite a bit actually.

If you don't care about baseball, that's fine, but why do you waste your time coming into a baseball thread to complain?

If you have such a problem with "smoke and mirrors" and the real issues being ignored, why are you telling a bunch of baseball fans on a message board? There are plenty of ways you can use your frustration in a constructive way, rather than bitching in a baseball thread on ATOT.

Who else am I supposed to tell? Congress? They know this is bullshit already thats why they are doing it. It is the baseball fans that need to know that this is simply stupid shenanigans. FWIW I love baseball. I grew up watching the rocket in his prime.

Clemens' lawsuit against against his trainer imo has little to do with his trainers 'allegations'. I doubt it will even go to court when its all said and done (just like marion jones' bs case against her ex who ratted her out), but it will give Clemens a bullsh!t excuse for not answering questions in front of Congress...'due to the pending case, my lawyers have advised me not to discuss....' etc.

/edit: I was wrong, he will be testifying next week according to his lawyer during the currently ongoing news conference.

Clemens is really coming across as an arrogant ass this past week. We all know Bud Selig will do nothing against those in the Mitchell report, if Clemens really wanted the story to go away, just ignore it. Bonds did a great job of it, up until it was conclusively proven... I honestly believe most fans don't care who's "named", more so that the problem goes away.

This looks like it's going to be some good drama before it's all done.

Are you kidding? Bonds was more ostracized than anyone in the history of sports about having tainted records and asterisks and all that..

Years past Bonds was really the only guy to point at, McGwire was retired, Palmeiro's career was very short-lived after his positive test (and he was attacked by fans, remember the ear plugs he would wear during games), Giambi already admitted, Sosa / Sheffield / whomever there wasn't much more than "look at his size".

But now there's, forget the number, fifty names in the Mitchell report. That's a lot for anyone baseball fan to focus on any one player, if Clemens just lays low, "tells the truth" to congress, he may just get lost in the shuffle. That's more what I meant. Fans / media really aren't talking about Petitte like they are Clemens.

Instead, Clemens is setting up high-profile interviews, press conferences, lawsuit, the whole nine yards. What, he disclosed a recorded phone call conversation he had with the guy after the Mitchell report was released. He's bringing the negative attention on himself.

Make roids legal then have them all run around with small wennies and shrunken balls and break every single MLB record, that will teach the younger people about life.
