Everything comes to and end. I loved it about 8 years ago, before streaming and you tube, when ppl would post here download links to full episodes.
Hammond and May have other jobs inside BBC, presenting a variety small shows and one-season series. They appear to get support for what they want to do. Perhaps they are tired of Top Gear, too. Also, there's a clear rank among the presenters, which pisses off 2 out of 3 presenters. I doubt they would leave. They could continue with 2 or get a younger, funnier bloke (like Russell Howard, who presents the Good News show). Clarkson leaving would give them a ton of material.
Perhaps only ITV can give them a big budget and start a family car show, but producing local crap and PBS-grade mini-series probably gives them a much better return. The inevitable comparisons during a first season could mean there would never be a second.
Fifth gear has IMO good, likable presenters, less crap, an equally attractive show (minus the big-bucks BBC production, of course) but not a fraction of Top Gear exposure and success. It's a more car-oriented show, though; testing ordinary cars, a couple of hot laps, and that's it. No fake, impossible races across Europe.
Fast-forwarding through the filler, there were tons of great moments, though. Probably one of the best entertainment shows ever. If it was on American TV, it would have more reruns than Seinfeld.
