mantle is meh so far but not enough data.

It's not necessarily a single card average fps "boost".

The min fps and frametimes as well as crossfire or low cpu power use cases are what it seems to improve and should be investigated.

The biggest question I have is if Mantle will allow quicker turn times.

Don't think so (I could be wrong). Mantle would not affect the pathfinding and other AI the game is running.

Otherwise this looks like a well optimized game.

133 fps even under the DX path. Should have not problem hitting 60 on most processors and as was mentioned this benchmark is pretty much a worst case scenario.

looks like Mantle in 4K which is GPU limited has less of an impact.
in 1080P it's a nice boost for the midrange 280X.

Barely 30FPS tho. 4.5% in 1080P-H, 10.4% in 1080P-U, 10.1% in 1440P and 8.5% in 4K. However the variance can be the factor for the difference.

the game is CPU heavy and GPUs cant do anything about it that's why there's still respectable framerates even at 4k.

RTS games or games like simcity, civilization, these games are CPU hungry due to AI. AMD processors would be having a hard time compared to i5s even.

I guess this game's cpu overhead isn't that big of a deal on a 4 Ghz i7. There might be a gain with a slower cpu with lots oh cores.

Yeah, I hope we'll get some benchmarks with older/slower CPUs. Mantle vs DX11 in this game is also extra interesting, because Civilization V was one of the few games confirmed to use and benefit from DX11 multithreaded rendering

It's more interesting that a GTX980 is nearly 30% faster than the GTX970...

Thats true. This is the biggest spread I've ever seen between the GTX 980 and the 970. I wonder if clock speed is playing a factor here?

Anandtech uses the reference GTX 980, but they use a Zotoc GTX 970.

As for DX11 vs Mantle, if Civ BE is anything like it's predecessor, it uses DX11 multithreading on NVidia cards, which reduces the CPU bottleneck considerably. CPU bottleneck isn't reduced to the extent of Mantle, but it's close enough to where the GPUs aren't being limited and are allowed to stretch their legs.

Reference blower R290X with reviewer comments regarding how loud it was...

Dejavu or AT not moving with the times? Seriously, did they test it in Quiet "Default" mode as per usual?

Also, what is with AAA studios messing up multi GPU on release?

Edit: If after all the hype the developers made regarding Mantle, and it doesn't speed up turn times or improve FPS by a good amount, its a failure.

I plan to pick up the game shortly after release. I have an i3 in my wife's computer and would be happy to do some benches with 7850CF vs single, and turn-time and FPS scaling with clocks on my i5 and i3.

You get more frames on pretty much every single mantle game so no idea why you would consider that a failure

More frames for free sounds great to me

Hey people. Mantle is and was and is to be directx 12 in beta-stage.

Mantle is already a development in directx 12. You can so some research 🙂

I'd like to see a core-utilization chart, Civ5 was able to take advantage of more than 2 cores, though maybe that's only when processing turns. Looks like as far as framerate is concerned, at least in DX, it's very much limited by single-threaded throughput.

Of course, seems like any modern CPU is capable of delivering 60FPS minimums.

An i5 4670K is going to be in a lot more gaming systems than a I7 5960X, those results are also pretty impressive. Hey guys Mantle reduces CPU dependency so lets test it on a $1000 CPU...
