It could also just mean that people who hoard material wealth instead of sharing it are not following Jesus' teaching.

That is what most accept the verse to mean, that those who have wealth while watching others starve are not following Jesus.

The pope has awesome shoes and a house of gold.

I have a lot of issue with the pope and religious groups in general. They have done as much harm as good. When I see churches being built with millions of dollars I shake my head because that is not what Jesus taught . I looked for a long time for a church that was following what Jesus taught and I have yet to find it. Most spend as much as they take in and not on causes to benefit others. They often spend more on music instruments and sound systems than they do on feeding the poor. God is not in the building, having a cheap metal frame building with a dirt floor and metal folding chairs and feeding the poor is closer to God than the million dollar church with plush carpet, sound systems, big screen displays and air conditioning ever are.

Could it be that the latest portions of the Bible were written 2000yrs ago? Do you think society, culture, everyday life, etc. could have changed in two millenia?

Aspects of society people took for granted so long ago are foreign to people today. There has to be some context when explaining passages from a book written in that era. Maybe that's why the explanations can be somewhat long-winded. I suspect it will be the same 2000yrs from now when people are trying to grasp why "The Office" is funny or what the heck "pig in a poke" means.

I know that cultures change over 2000 years. I'm not arguing that and in fact, you're kind of supporting my point. The Bible isn't supposed to change to adapt to what's right and wrong. The Bible should ALWAYS be right if it's going to be the blueprint for a particular religion. It SHOULD survive the test of time. That's why it has no credibility in my opinion. If it has to keep changing to account for the morality of the current era, then it wasn't legitimate to begin with.

Wow, you guys are finding contardictions in stuff written by a bunch of different people over 2000 years ago. Facinating.

Problem is that billions of people literally believe the book was inspired by a flawless and infinitely powerful being. That changes everything.

You gotta ask, if God couldn't get the most important story in the most import book in the history of the universe straight, why should we take any of it seriously? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCdJT8avbpo

Abraham was a rich man. It is not inherently evil to be rich. He had servants (Word for Slaves). In some parts of the bible, like the story of Ruth gleaming grain after the harvest (Something poor people did to get food), and the master "Boaz" of the servants told the servants to drop a little so she could feed herself and her mother. This story is in the book of RUTH. It is very interesting because it shows that customs of the Jews are much different than our customs. It also shows that they cared about their servants and their distant relatives.

Some may not understand why they bothered with putting this as a book in the bible in a male patriarchal bible. Jesus line of ancestry is through Ruth, because of how jewish customs work, and how men were resposnible for raising up children for their deceased male family relations.
